Fmr Chief Magistrate to contest May 11 polls

Presidential Candidate of the NDPOG, Mrs Juliet Holder-Allen
Presidential Candidate of the NDPOG, Mrs Juliet Holder-Allen

THE National Democratic Party of Guyana (NDPOG), led by former Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen, announced on Friday its intention to contest the general and regional elections slated for May 11.Almost standing alone at the Guyana Legionnaires Hall on Carifesta Avenue to announce the NDPOG’s intention, Ms Holder-Allen related to a sparse gathering that “certain information is on a need-to-know basis.”

The party’s manifesto, which was provided to reporters, states that the former Chief Magistrate will run as the party’s presidential candidate, and former police officer and attorney-at-law Mr Patrice Henry will run as its prime ministerial candidate.

The NDPOG Manifesto also listed Attorney-at-law Lyndon Amsterdam as the party’s Attorney-General (AG) designate; Namela Rowe its Public Relations Officer (PRO); Donna Stephens its General Secretary/Treasurer; and Garfield Hoyte its Administrative Manager respectively.

Mrs Holder-Allen abruptly dismissed questions about the party’s campaign and its financial standings. She noted thus: “All you need to know today is that we are here!”, and said that the most important issue at this point is getting the necessary paperwork completed for Nomination Day on April 7.

Mrs Holder-Allen said: “This is my country, and this is the International Decade of African People, and I have a role to play to shape what the society is supposed to be.”

She placed emphasis on reinstating the ‘Common Entrance’ examinations to the education system, noting that what presently obtains does not craft the minds of new leaders.

On September 2, 2008, Former Chief Magistrate Ms Juliet Holder-Allen handed in her resignation at the Court of Appeal after being sent on indefinite leave almost five years ago following allegations of misconduct.

On July 30, 2009, she was arrested at her home and whisked off to the Brickdam Police Station for questioning pertaining to the then Ministry of Health fire. At the time of that arrest, the Guyana Chronicle had reported that a police message left at her home requesting that she report at the Brickdam Police Station for questioning had been ignored.

“When she failed to heed their request, members of the Joint Services (police/army) descended on her city residence at about 05:45hrs that morning, took her into custody and escorted her to the Brickdam Police Station”, this publication had reported.

The now presidential candidate of the NDPOG has indicated that she is not fearful of any party, and has all hopes of taking all the seats in the upcoming May 11 elections. (Rebecca Ganesh)

Could you imagine if some coolie had said "This is my country, and this is the International Decade of Indian People, and I have a role to play to shape what the society is supposed to be"?

The word "Indian" itself is racist now in Guyana according to the Coalition and its mob.

I despise what has become of the discourse. Everyone is opportunistically throwing the word "racist" and "racism" at each other since this election season began.

It has the effect of shutting down all sensible debate. Every two dollar mind latches onto "racism" so as to seize the moral high ground and delegitimize their opponents. It's a stupid game.

What we have in fact is a more complex mix than that. We have two parties with a racial consciousness. The racists are the people within those parties who really believe their race is superior to the other race(s).

If you do not believe in the superiority of your own race, then you're not really a racist. That you share a common tribal identity based principally on race is not necessarily equivalent to racism.

Maybe you misread me. I do not subscribe to the notion that anyone is or should feel that his race makes him superior.

I am for the notion that people should take pride in their own race, tribe, nationality (statist and non-statist meaning of the word), and nation.

Because I am proud to be Indian does not mean that I in any way think I'm superior in any way whatsoever to any other group or race.

Were I born African, I suspect I would similarly be proud of my glorious African heritage. There is much to be proud of in all of the world's races, tribes, and nationalities.

If we lived in a world in which we were all hideously the "same" culture, blood, language etc. etc. it would be terribly bland and boring. I want Blacks, Indians, Europeans, and Native Peoples etc. etc. to remain somewhat unique. Where is the racism in that?

Well I'm an American. Then I'm Guyanese. Then I'm Indian. Then I belong to my family tribe which is an incredibly diverse bunch of people including Indians, Afro-Guyanese douglas, a sprinkling of West Indians, and even couple whites.

The Indian identity and the African identity are the two principal constituent parts of the Guyanese identity. I don't think seriously challenges this. I think the problem arises when certain social engineers try to quash these identities for some artificial and "official" version of Guyaneseness. Cultural identities develop on their own. Let the forces of history "naturally" evolve the Guyanese identity not our armchair social engineers seeking to "mould us."

Coolie peeps say more than that. Go and review the parades and proclamations and pomp of Indian Arrival day. Of course it was changed to Arrival day but it is owned by the PPP and run by Robert Persaud after they killed Gift. As I suggested, Amerindians need a day of lamentation to commemorate the coming of others. By the way, her grandmother is Amerindian so she only acknowledges her African side.

You and Ugli started the commentary on race. I believe the lady said she is there because she wants to be a part of the discourse on her country and emphasized her African roots as greatly motivating her.

Don't be so damn dishonest like the GNI mob to conflate what I said with that others are saying or implying. I did not rubbish her statements. She's perfectly within her rights to say such a thing. I actually think it's perfectly fine.

I simply pointed out that a similar statement from an Indian would have been called "racist." That anyone would call such statements in a multicultural society where we all have some concerns peculiar to our own groups is nonsense.

I support this woman's statements as I would if it came from an Indian or Amerindian.

Save the inferences and conflations for others. My post can stand on its own. I made a limited comment about a very very specific matter. I did not question the inherent decency and propriety of the statement.I merely stand for the right of all to make such a statement.

Where is the racism in that?

you right but are you a Guyanese first or a Indian

Only communists and religious freaks thing it is possible to re engineer culture.

Could you imagine if some coolie had said "This is my country, and this is the International Decade of Indian People, and I have a role to play to shape what the society is supposed to be"?

The word "Indian" itself is racist now in Guyana according to the Coalition and its mob.

every thing in guyana is now racist seeing we in the funny season, freeum house have a donkey name rohee they say is a racist

You and Ugli started the commentary on race. I believe the lady said she is there because she wants to be a part of the discourse on her country and emphasized her African roots as greatly motivating her.

More hogwash from a mixed race racist whose coolie wife dumped him for a coolie man living in RH.

somebody picking on some one family

Your posts stand on its own indeed. You made the comparison, or rather the contrast that highlight a presumptuousness on her part as Indians cannot say it with out inputting the wrath of others.

I simply pointed out that the record is abundant with Indians saying all sorts of silly things including emphasizing they are made in gods image and all others come a little short. Those are the facts and you can take it as you deem fit.

As I said dum dum....I never had a coolie wife...had a coolie girlfriend and we do have two children.

She is from Goa, married once... another Goan whom her family found for her. He died, she brought my children to the east coast so we can raise them together. we did.  She is a medical doctor and practices not far from me. If she wants to marry one of them lungara from RH she is well within her rights to do so. I promised to take her to RH because she never went there.

Maybe when the children comes home this summer I will take them to see how the British screwed up the culture. BTW she claims she is Portuguese because she was raised in Portugal! You need to convince her she is Indian!

Then we are agreed. People have a right to address the ethnic concerns of any particular ethnicity in Guyana without being called "racist." And this courtesy should extend to every single group.

That some Indians make some regrettable comments does not automatically make all statements from any Indian anywhere that touch on ethnic issues automatically suspect. We have an illustrious history in Guyana of anti-Indian comments from the various non-Indian ethnicities and yet those groups do not lose their freedom of speech rights when it comes to ethnicity as a consequence.

If we are indeed to progress as a people and as a State and conquer the demon of race, we must look it straight in the eye and speak our truth to each other and work out a "just settlement" so that we can move on and argue about mundane issues of governing our society. And the way we do that is not by throwing around the word "racist" to chill or end the debate when our interlocutors opposite are speaking.

FM

Wish this lady well. Seemed as if the Govt treated her badly when she was a magistrate.

However, any race-centric party will not make it. To claim that Afros are being discriminated is a nonstarter.  The PPP has victimized all the working poor, and only cares about its rich, parasitic, contractor class bourgeoisie.

We need new leadership that will bring people together.  That's why we must support the Coalition.

FM

Let's just say the leaders of the Coalition have more integrity than the whole PPP cabinet put together. Moses and Ramjattan are senior members of that leadership. Moses, Ramjattan and David are not kleptos.

FM

i am always amused when people like Shaitaan attempt to turn the obvious on its head and have us believe that the problem is trigger happy do-gooders who are intoxicated with political correctness . . .

i re-post a couple of the "[non]suspect" and "[non]racial" statements touching on "ethnic issues" by him and his "cousin," just so he can be assured that i would be the last one on GNI inclined "to chill or end the debate . . ."

Berbicians, please take note where Moses is and what he is doing to his own people. History will repeat itself. The PNC is coming back. Coolies, prepare yourself for death and destruction. Men, hide your wives and daughters. Moses will give them away to the slave masters."
