Flashback!!! Duck curry never tasted so darn sweet

THE annual Digicel Duck Curry Competition came off with a bang last Sunday at its usual location, the ever popular and scenic Number 63 Beach, way up on the Corentyne.According to word reaching the Buzz, the event, the fifth to date, attracted a record 20 participants this year, and saw the coveted first prize going to Team Dindyal’s Vidyawattie Rampersaud and Radica Dindyal. For their pains, ‘Team Dindyal’ walked away with $275,000 in cash, a trophy and a hamper while, ‘Bombay Masala’, which placed second took home a hamper, a trophy and $175,000. Coming in third was Hormala Basdeo and Bonita and the Kids who won for themselves a trophy, a hamper and $125,000 in cash.

As always, the event attracted Guyanese in their numbers, and from all walks of life, from as far afield as East and West Coast Demerara and even overseas.

The competition was judged on taste, aroma, texture and presentation, and saw judges, pot spoon in hand, moving from table to table in an effort to arrive at a fair decision. There were also spectacular performances from Sally Sagram, Omadath Maraj, soca sensation,Jumo Primo, while Lindon “Jumbie” Jones traded in his hat as comedian for that of MC. Music was provided by Crown Vibes Sound System, while the event was sponsored Beharry Group of Companies, Banks DIH Limited, Digicel and GuyOil. Among added attractions were a buns eating, egg throwing, dance-off and sing-off contest. A new twist year was the presentation of sponsors with prizes as a token of appreciation for their unstinting support over the years. The last we heard, it was a truly family-oriented event, which was made all the more sweeter with Digicel offering cell-phones for as low as $2900. According to Company Public Relations Manager, Vidya Sanichara, Digicel has been on board the event from the inception, and has seen it grow from strength to strength. It’s all part of Digicel’s way of giving back to society community, and creating the kind of environment that is conducive to good clean family entertainment.
