Fernandes rolls back the years to win FACC cycle race in West Berbice

The Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) of Berbice in collaborating with the B Division of the Guyana Police Force recently ran off a 30-mile cycle road race on the West Berbice.

The event which was dubbed the β€œRace Against Drugs”, started from Bennet Dam in front of Roy’s Taxi Service, Rosignol Village, West Coast, Berbice, proceeded to Litchfield School and back to finish at it point of origin.
The event, which was for cyclists of the FACC, saw some 17 cyclists take to the start.  In the end veteran rider Sybrone Fernandes showed the younger riders how it is done by winning the event in a time of 1 hour 1 minute 27 seconds. He was followed by Orel Ross, Clement Doris, Sanjay Baijnauth and Samuel Mootoo in that order.
The first female to cross the finishing line was Shenika Teixeira, while in the 12-14 category Shivnarine Bhowandin won from Cameron Yorrick.
Out of the six sprint prizes available, Ross rode away with four, while Fernandes took two.
The Presentation of prizes and other incentives was done immediately after the completion of the race, by among others, newly appointed Community Relations Officer of the Police B Division, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mark Vigilance and parents.
The club would like to thank the various sponsors of the event including the Guyana Police Force, Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, Assistant Superintendents Parks and Vigilance, Inspector Clay Rose, Ramesh Vernon and Bryan and Sons General Store among others.
It also expresses its appreciation to past Secretary Rhonda Russell for her assistance. The race was organized by the Club Coach Randolph Roberts. It was the second successive event staged on the West Berbice and according to Roberts the event is being held to help revitalized the sport in that part of the County.
