I almost forgot how multilingual our coolies get when they get political.

A Wesleyan missionary in British Guiana in the 18th century wrote back in his official report to the London Society of his denomination of the peculiar practice of the coolies and blacks from the unlettered to the local elite of using big words to buttress arguments. And how usually they order these words were strung together made no sense whatsoever or weren't even real words.

He even noted how one canecutter (most likely kneeru's ancestor) threatened to bring an Englishman up on charges for "cursing him." The Englishman had used a Latin phrase without thinking.

Language is a wonderful thing. Used poorly it sounds contrived and does the speaker or writer no good. Used well it is a formidable tool. Very few people have that natural gift and it is a gift. I very much envy that facility. My wife has that skill in the spoken form where she can weave a story with graceful ease, naturally, fluidly and on listening one knows there is no way to improve on it.

For very one of us, we have to multiply the languages we speak by two to get to the right number Each language has an public form and a familiar personal form. I became interested in Linguistics on encountering Chomsky but on formally studying one finds quickly what Michel Thomas harps on. " a sense of familiarity" between them that is astounding.

Language is the only facility we pick up on our own  and the reason why some say it is an instinct...a language instance. It is also quite easy for languages to be created. The people in New Guinea created thousands in a few hundred square miles!

Amazingly,  every deaf child creates their own language from scratch if they do not have a deaf culture to support them. Even when they do they rapidly begin to innovate on the signs and become creative with them just as we  with speech.
