Reports which started to circulate on the internet earlier this year about a woman giving birth to a 13-pound baby in Australia, was enough to bring Guyanese Deowattie Jagnanan out of the ‘woodwork’.

Deowattie Jagnanan is sure her baby is among the world’s heaviest.

The 26-year-old Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo resident merely wanted to make it known that she too has accomplished a major childbirth feat. In fact, hers might very well be a worthy entry for the Guinness Book of World Records.

You see on September 15, 2016, at 13:06 hours, Jagnanan delivered her second child, Eron Anthony Thom, at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by way of Caesarean Section [C-Section]. He was recorded as having a length of 62 centimetres (24.4 inches) and a weight of ‘7kg 100’ (7.1 kg) which translates to just over 15 and a half pounds.

Several medical personnel, according to Jagnanan, were astonished by the size of her baby and had even informed that that was the largest baby they’d ever seen delivered at the institution. There, was, however, no public hullabaloo following the birth of the child like what obtained in Australia earlier this year. That birth attracted extensive media coverage.

But before the reports of the 13-pound baby boy earlier this year, there were other international media reports of a woman giving birth to a 15-pound baby girl in India in May of 2016. It is believed that that birth had surpassed a 14 pounds, five ounces birth of yet another baby girl previously in Massachusetts, United States.

However, the heaviest baby ever reported on was a baby boy born in 1879 weighing 22 pounds. That child however only lived for 11 hours.
Given the foregoing reports, Jagnanan seems to be on track to setting a deserving record with the enormous birth weight of her son.

But it is rather surprising that this had not already gained public recognition, and not merely the few remarks voiced by health care workers at the premier health facility. Whether fit for the Guinness Book of World Records or not, this was undeniably an astounding delivery that should have gained far more attention since it occurred.

According to Jagnanan, even before she gave birth she was already aware that something was very different. “I knew the baby could not be normal…in terms of size,” said Jagnanan, as she spoke of being suspicious that she was actually pregnant with twins although several ultrasounds proved otherwise. “The last ultrasound I did, the doctor did say it was a big baby but I just kept thinking this got to be twins, because no way one baby could got me feeling this way,” said Jagnanan.

The pregnancy, she recalled, was very difficult. “…I couldn’t bend down, I couldn’t do a lot of things that I could’ve done during my first pregnancy…I used to even have to get help to lie down properly,” she disclosed.

On the day of delivery, Jagnanan said that she was given the option to have a natural birth or C-Section. She opted for C-Section, the similar route she had chosen when she delivered her first and much smaller [six pounds] baby. The average normal delivery weight of babies does not exceed seven pounds, five ounces.

“When I consider that I had the option to push out this baby…I wonder which angle I would’ve been pushing from,” said Jagnanan, as she remembered “when I was eight months me whole belly bottom started to swell and swell. I didn’t even want to go on the road because people used to stare me down…I use to feel like people seeing me like I was the woman with the largest belly ever; I was so embarrassed.”

Among the oddities during her pregnancy, she recalled having a desperate craving to eat soap powder. That craving dissipated immediately after delivery.

Jagnanan related that after she was introduced to her baby after delivery she was alarmed when a nurse told her that he was just a few pounds away from weighing 16 pounds. “I could’ve dropped dead when she told me that,” Jagnanan reflected.

Eight months later, little Eron Anthony Thom continues to grow faster than most children his age, and has been given a clean bill of health.

Jagnanan, a housewife, has been doing her best to care for her young son, but revealed that because of his weight it has been practically impossible for her to physically carry him around. In her attempt to point out the imposing nature of his growth, Jagnanan noted “When he was a baby I had to use large pampers on him, at two, three months I had to start using stage three pampers and now I have to get stage four pampers for him.”

She, however, noted that he is one of the happiest babies that she has ever seen, a notion that many who have met him have endorsed.
