President Donald Ramotar on Monday, bemoaned the burden of the Linden protest on the national economy and thousands of Lindeners.

The president addressing Toshaos at the opening of their annual conference in Georgetown, said he has given clear instructions to the security forces to ensure that law and order is maintained.

He apologized to the Toshaos for the difficulties and harassment they faced as they journeyed to Georgetown for the conference resulting from Linden protest.

He warned of the dangers, if there is a breakdown of law and order in Guyana and cited Somalia as an example.
The Head of State denounced the violent protest being perpetuated in Linden by political elements which he says will not be tolerated.

He warned that Guyana will not return to being an undemocratic and unconstitutional country and called on all to reject such underdevelopment.

Ramotar meanwhile, said his government is prepared to put the community of Linden on the National grid since it would be unfair for residents in the community to enjoy subsidized electricity and other communities have to pay the full cost.

The opposition used their one seat majority in the assembly to shave $20.9B from the 2012 budget which he said is affecting a number of projects aimed at enhancing Amerindian development and national development as a whole.

He noted that the sincerity of the opposition will put to the test on Thursday, when legislators meet to restore the monies cut from the budget to the various agencies.

The President must eradicate terrorists and extremists elements from Guyana. Those who incite and support them must also be thrown in jail.

I doan condone any type of voilence, but any GOG must know they lack the ability to maintain law and order. The Linden Incident is just another extension of an ungovernable country. These things occur in the society at large because the citizens have no directions. Perhaps, no real purpose to life. And that is a failure on who you think?

I agree with this statement, however, I think that what is coming out of President Ramoutar's mouth is just "big talk". He has to walk the talk and so far he has shown how weak his administration is in dealing with the Linden situation. He has to take decisive action and stop giving hugs to the thugs he is negotiating with. I am speaking of Sharma Soloman, Vanessa Kissoon, the delinquent taxpayer Nigel Hughes and others. He has to end that Tripartite crap he started with Politicians who don't care a rats ass about the economy. The President has to give the orders to the Security forces to remove , by whatever means necessary, all barriers affecting the free movement of goods and services to the interior and other affected region. Country comes first Mr. President NOT Linden. If other regions continue to be affected then Linden should be isolated, meaning nothing gets in and no one gets out of Linden. It either we all swim or sink together.

so back to slo fiah mo fiah.  true people do need opportunity, but linden is n different than the rest of Guyana and many other developing countries.  this is not about opportunities but all to do with power politics.  the pNC are hiding behind their footstool, the AFC to create mayhem and instability.

This is part of a larger plan and the anti-PPP clowns in the AFC are too blinded by hatred of the PPP and consumed with self-serving interest to care or to realize.

The president is giving the carrot a chance.  He needs to give it time to ensure all opportunities have been exhausted.  Sooner or later he will have to harden his stance.  I believe he has been caught off-guard by the killings.

The president must act now to end and remove the extremists elements from Linden. There should be no room for negotiations with extremists and terrorists.

They destroyed private property and are blocking public roads in trying to bring down the government. Time for action to bring this situation to an end.

The army should use as much force as necessary to remove those who are holding the entire town hostage.

The "army" should not be engaged in internal security issues unless mass mayhem is threatened with the intent of overthrowing the duly elected Govt.  The Govt should stick to robust policing.

Dem Bais giving Police free bottled water to drink. Remember, one Police in Linden told the protestors to take clear the bridge and allow Ramoutar to come through. If they don't like what he is saying they can block the bridge again.

Those black clothes guys could clear the place.  Bringing in the army is a militarization of the dispute.  This is uncalled for as it seems the shootings were.  The Govt should act in moderation and use appropriate force.

This is exactly my point. This situation must end immediately otherwise we may see a second attempt to bring down the government. This time the police will sit idly by, drinking free bottled water.

Totally agree...wipe out the terrorist who shoot women and children in the back at linden...from top to bottom...

Terrorists are those in Linden who destroy and burn private property and block public roads. Because they want to pay $ 5 per kilowatt while the rest of the country pay $ 53 or more for electricity.

The rest of Guyana cannot subsidize Linden with Billions of dollars.

Threats will not prevent me or anyone else from speaking out against terrorists and bullies.

Once the govt initiates a commission of inquiry and govt and residents engage in civil conversation the protesters must cease disruptive protests or else the govt has an obligation to enforce an end to it. This is where David Granger as the new leader of the PNC has a great opportunity to intervene for a peaceful end of the disruptive protest and prove himself as a 'Real' Leader.

Guyana is a country beset with missed opportunities from Jagan to Burnham to Rodney to Hoyte to Jagan to Corbin to Janet to Jagdeo to AFC to Ramoutar and now to Granger. MISSED OPPORTUNITIES !

There you go again, demanding ethnic cleansing so that only indians occupy Linden.

Read your history books. 3000 Indo Guyanese were cleaned by the PNC from that area. You need to go to school and get a proper education before postng nonsense.

The people of Linden are free to live there. Just the terrorist elements in Linden must be eradicated. Did you read the original post in this thread ?

Miners, interior suppliers complain complain to Gov’t about Linden blockadePDFPrintE-mail

AS the ongoing blockade of roads in and around Linden continue, miners and suppliers from Linden, Mahdia, Lethem and Bartica have appealed to President Donald Ramotar for the roads  to be cleared.

Minister Robert Persaud providing an update to miners and interior community suppliers on government’s efforts to resolve the Linden situation

A delegation turned up to the Office of the President yesterday, and Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud, met them on behalf of the President. The Permanent Secretary of Ministry, Chairman, Commissioner and senior Guyana Geology and Mines Commission officers were also at the meeting.  The delegation consisted of miners, foresters, and food and fuel suppliers.
They pointed out that their operations have been at a  standstill for over three weeks, and they are facing burdens amounting to millions of dollars. Some complained that their assets were also destroyed by those manning the barriers. Others were also threatened or harassed.  They further complained that they cannot ply their trade to service mining, forest and other vulnerable communities that depend on supplies from the coast.
Minister Persaud expressed the President's regrets and updated them on government's efforts to resolve the Linden situation.
One transportation service provider stated that “the people of Linden have a right to protest, but at the same time they should not endanger the livelihoods of other families and the rights of miners and foresters to access food, fuel and other supplies”.
Currently, several trucks are parked at the Guyana National Stadium parking lot since the protest action began three weeks ago, and the businessmen are counting their losses.
Following fervent representation for support, Minister Persaud instructed the GGMC to coordinate temporary support to alleviate the plight of the businessmen/truckers.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has established a support hotline, where stakeholders of the mining and forestry sectors can call for support. Interested stakeholders are urged to call the GGMC at 223-9833 or the Guyana Forestry Commission at 231-0355

Continue to think this.  You all thought that the majority of Lindeners would support the PPP in 2006, and you thought so again in 2011.

Well history has shown what happened there so clearly the PPP has no clue about what Lindeners think.

But you see sir the PPP has never dealt with the fact that 95% of the Afrian/mixed population hate them.  So what ever the PPP does which is seen to negatively impact this populatuion will be viewed thru racial eyes.

What the PPP needs to do is to admit that it has a problem with the African/mixed population. Engage in a broad based dialogue and COLLECTIVELY develop measures to address this issue. They had an opportunuity to do so when Jagdeo took over, not encumbered was he by the stench of the 60s.  They refused to.  AGAIN under Ramotar there was another opportunity, but rather than doing that he has been shooting down protesting blacks.

Being wrong and strong and shooting and killing MORE black people isnt goi9ng to be a solution.

And its about time that the govt shows its serious to address their issues as well.   Linden has been an impoverished town for a long time and sadly many Lindeners have now past the point of thinking that they have a stake in the success of the nation.

Can you tell us exactly how this subsidy is provided.  According to Chris Ram BOSAI doesnt lose money generating electricity.  So is the govt paying BOSAI too much so that they generate a surplus?  Is a major global corporation being subsidized by the govt?

Funny that people are running their mouths rather than demanding more information.

And when we see the govt protect another state owned monopoly (the telephone company) one can only wonder.

And apparently you wish more deaths by demanding that force be used.  This is no longer the AFC and APNU and when you begin to understand this then there might be progress.  That bus left the terminal when the police attacked without provocation and Ramotar didnt deal with the fallout which occurred, but instead sent his spin masters to condemn an entire town.

Given that it wa sthe GPF, and not the APNU nor the AFC who killed those protesters I fail to see hbow any one but the GPF and the Ministry of Home Affairs can be held accountable.  Prior to the shootings there was no violence and that which occurred later happened because the crowd was enraged by the brutality showed to it.

Had Ramotar gone to Linden to see the protesters the very next day as one would have expected, and not have his media portray them as a bunch of terrorists, not having his goons tell lies that the police were under attack....maybe we might be beyoind this, because as you reacll this was initally planned only for five days.

The PPP blundered and you wish things to get even worse.

At the very least they need to get rid of Rohee who is clearly beyond his abilities and shoild never have been made Minister of H/A.  He has failed there as he failed every where else.

FM

On the contrary, the protesters blocked off the main route to the interior and in Buxtonian Freedom Fighter style demanded $25k toll from miners and others traveling through. Buildings and heavy construction equipments were set on fire and police officers, sent to keep the peace were attacked viciously by the protesters. This was the prelude to the event that left three protesters dead.
