GT, In Guyana, we deal wid families where the drunk  husband kill his wife wid a cutlass. When he sober and realize what he did, he drink poison or hang himself.

Me feel sorry for the children left behind, where relatives take advantage of them, until they get  older to look afta  dem self.

Even today,  me cant  watch  dem chopping meat at the market and me bypass dat section.

Been there a few times. Beautiful island. I saw my first and only Kerosene Refrigerator, and got my first bird cage from a family friend, there.

GT, your post reminds me of some good memories about our kerosene   refrigerator  and the many custard ice-blocks  we had as kids. We also had a kerosene stove with bake-oven.

The kerosene clothes-iron, that had to be pumped with air every now and again like a gas lamp,  would sometimes flare-up and we had to be careful that the clothes is not set on fire.

Similar to a wood burning fireplace chimney, the kerosene fridge chimney had to be cleaned  often, with  a long brush.  

That was the only time I ever saw a kerosene refrigerator. When my parents got married they had a kerosene stove with the inverted bottle and a kerosene oven. Lose your memories and you lose your identity.

GT, me rememba de inverted kerosene bottle.  I am trying to rememba if it had a wire handle to carry it. I believe a wire was around it and another piece for the handle to carry it.

We had a metal container for kerosene, but sometimes we cant find it and I will be sent to the store to buy kerosene wid the bottle.

Me sister Elaine used to say ' Bai if you play and buss ah bottle, you betta na come back ah house'. One time she even try to give me  a pillow to sleep in de nearby playground,  if me buss de bottle.  She is dead now.

If I remember correctly, you first came  as Bibi on GNI and said 'not one more cent'.

It is unfortunate that the internal discussion on GNI is not positive regarding this issue, because the people who needs our help, suffers the most. 

It is sad  that  some NGOs in Guyana  tarnished the name of others  and a tremendous mistrust exist.

But we should end this negative discussion and allow Leguan to prevail in a positive manner.

Recent visits were not exactly pleasant because the population has declined quite significantly over the years and the bustling activities associated with rice, coconut, cattle and saw-milling have all declined quite significantly; most noticeably during the past two/three years. With respect to the graves, I cannot be too sure of the duration of Dutch influence; however, the name of the island itself and those of many villages do indeed indicate Dutch occupation at some point in the past.

Keffer, I am pleased  that you are from Wakenaam, but sad to hear of the decline of  the island. It is not different from the farmers in Berbice, especially Black Bush Polder that I know well. I am from Albion sugar estate and lived in North Western Canada for a few decades. 

After writing my last post  I found my 1964  diary of names, addresses and a small photograph of my many pen-friends in other countries, including  Guyana : Leguan,  Hog Island, etc.

Unfortunately,  my friends in Wakenaam are not listed, but at the back of the proof prints from my negatives in  the 1960's I wrote their names and dates.  These prints are in boxes with dozens of other photos, that I will find after a video shoot tomorrow.

I believe it might be better to publish the names here, so others can help if they know the person.  I am hesitant to publish people photos on the net and have never done so, but I sent them personally by email, after I make contact.  I just sent some to the groom in NY of a GDF wedding I photographed at Non Pariel in 1970.  

I have not been to leguan since 1994 I had to walk from the stelling all the way to Dorn Hagg ack part as it is called, I will have to visit again when I go back, there is still some distant family living in Kingston, this time I will ride wan Jahwaharlal ah mean dankey  so me can see the place at a slow pace.

I went to that Island twice,one of my cousin wife [is one the people who had the boat service daughter]also i know Charles the Indian dancer,me also thinks my former boss "little Mo",owner of Mohameds Radio and Electronics in Robb St is from that Island.

Dad had a good friend there. A rice farmer named Aziz. Related to Imam Bacchus from Affiance, Essequibo. Went there once. Took a tour of the estate. Chap had the tallest Cayenne banana trees I ever saw.
