Minister of Education Shaik Baksh and technical team inspect condition of the Golden Grove Secondary School

Education Minister Shaik Baksh and a technical team today visited the Golden Grove Secondary school to assess the physical condition of the building that has recently been featured in the news after parents held several protests condemning its deplorable state.

Some of the said parents met and engaged Minister Baksh at his office on Tuesday and the Minister subsequently resolved to personally visit the school.

“I’m really glad that I came, because I’m seeing for myself, first hand, the state of this school, which is dire need of some urgent repair,” Minister Baksh said.

Minister Baksh and team conducted a detailed inspection of the school’s environs and pin-pointed several key areas that need immediate attention.

The areas identified are those that are not currently being addressed under the $3.3M contract under which some level of rehabilitation work is being conducted on the school.

The Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Region Four is responsible for the repairs that should have been completed during the August vacation.
The Minister and team identified the school’s sanitary block, the windows, and the leaky roof among some of the priority areas.

The cupboards in the Home Economics section, were also identified for repaired
“The Ministry of Education itself will support the emergency works that will have to be done here,” Baksh said and that “The ministry will provide the funding from its own budget, to address these specific areas.”

Minister Baksh also pledged the ministry’s assistance in upgrading the school’s science and computer labs, assuring that by January, 20 computers would have been provided for the renovated computer laboratory.

Three classrooms are to be rehabilitated to alleviate the concern of overcrowding as they will be refurbished, painted and furniture put in placed, he said.

The ministry will use the same contractors that are at present working on the school to facilitate the areas identified, he said.

“Those things promised will be put on the drawing board immediately and the ministry will move quickly to get them done,” Baksh promised.
With regard to further extensive work that the school requires, Baksh said that two of the ministry’s engineers will be working along with the regional engineer to conduct an assessment of these capital works for which provision are to be made in the 2012 budget.

If Baksh is really interested in the education of children in Guyana, why de hell does it take a parent's protest for him to be another King Kong with 'taxpayers gifts'.
Dont they have government paid people at these schools who submit reports.

The photo op looks good, typical PPP types. If it were region 6, there will be another denial.

It is becoming common practice to protest for things the GOG should be getting off their ass and do. It will be hell to pay on election day.

Show me proof that this school was not taken over by the GOG, like they have done to many others.
I also helped building schools in Berbice, all taken over by the GOG.

Baksh is playing games we all know this, The govt is responsible for this he is just playing the ass and we know it.

This is why the PPP is again losing so much ground people cussin us when they bring up these issues. Sugar workers cussin us when they show us they have to go and purchase exercise books. This was something we said we were doing in the 2006 manifesto now they are laughing at us.
