President Bharrat Jagdeo has said it is the disobedient driver of the vehicle which refused to give way to an oncoming presidential convoy that should have been charged and not the young man who allegedly showed his middle finger.

He spoke at the Office of the President yesterday at a press conference at which he addressed several pressing issues.

The president weighed in on Wednesday’s protest outside State House by a small group of persons who sought to take a stand against the treatment of an 18-year-old young man who was locked up for two weeks after being charged for ‘flipping the bird’ to the Presidential convoy.

The president bemoaned the fact that the protesters had decided to use this incident as a cause for their protest. He said too that the driver of the vehicle in which the young man was, and not the young man himself, should be the one facing the law.

“Let me make clear what happened. I am going up the East Coast [and] I am reading. Normally I say to the people in the vehicle don’t use both sirens…it is too loud. So I heard both sirens blaring and I looked up. Way ahead of me I saw the outrider using the siren to get the vehicle to pull into the left lane. The driver refused to do so. So eventually they overtook on the inside lane and as they were passing this finger emerged. I was way behind so I never saw this person. He didn’t show me the finger. Apparently he did this to the convoy. So that is the story,” the President explained.
“Now this is probably a misguided youth and I don’t think that he should face prosecution because of this. But who I think they should go after is the driver. If he doesn’t even respect a police vehicle with a siren, just imagine you trying to overtake him…you and your family…how he will treat you,” the president said.

“He didn’t show me, personally, the finger. I was way behind the outrider’s vehicle. Suddenly it becomes a big issue and a cause for protest; but like I said before, this fringe lunatic group needs something to keep them going from time to time,” he said.
