In doing a research project I had to interview someone who was a participant of this meeting.  He is a very old Jewish, American scholar of international relations who worked in the White House when he graduated from Princeton University a long time ago.  I asked him what Kennedy really thought of Cheddi.  He said, I am not really sure, but after Cheddi left the room Kennedy turned to me and said, "That is a very stupid man."

One is left to wonder what our history would have been like if this meeting had not taken place.  Cheddi went there in good faith to ask for financial aid.  33 years after this meeting the New York Times published this:

"After Dr. Jagan left Washington, Kennedy met in secret with his top national security officers. A pragmatic plan took shape.

Still-classified documents depict in unusual detail a direct order from the President to unseat Dr. Jagan, say Government officials familiar with the secret papers."

I think this view has changed now.  Indians are gaining a lot of respect with the US.  In Silicon Valley, Indians dominate the technology companies.  On Wall Street, many Indians have prominent positions like Vikram Pandit was CEO of the giant Citigroup.  Not to mention the medical field where many of the experts are top Indian doctors.

I didn't mean to focus on the Indian aspect though.  I am wondering about the path of history and what Guyana would have been like today without US intervention.

As much as I like Cheddi, he was indeed stupid to mess with the US.

I think Kennedy said he want nothing else to do with Jagan and there shall be not another CUBA in the Western Hemisphere.

I am giving him another 2 years to perform. It's too early to judge him. Malfeasances during the past 23 years cannot be fixed in such a short time.
