Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- They were taken from their homes, some pulled from their beds, in the middle of the night.

They were fathers, brothers and sons, members of the U.S.-allied Albu Nimr tribe -- the Sunni clan considered among the last holdouts against ISIS in Iraq's western desert.

About 50 members of the tribe were abducted in Hit in Anbar province, west of Baghdad, during the early morning hours on Saturday, Sheikh Nabil Al-Ga'oud, a tribal leader, told CNN.

Their fate is unknown. But Al-Ga'oud and others believe they are likely dead, the latest casualties of ISIS who have killed hundreds of members of the tribe in mass executions in recent days.

The Albu Nimr, who number in the tens of thousands, are ready to fight to take back Hit, Al-Ga'oud said. The city was seized last month by ISIS fighters after weeks of fighting the tribesmen.

Hit and neighboring Ramadi were holdouts in the Sunni-dominated Anbar province after ISIS swept in from Syria, taking town after town in the western province. Albu Nimr tribesmen were among those who fought them until they began running of out weapons and supplies.

Tribal leader says fighters ready to strike ISIS

Albu Nimr has a strong force ready to attack Hit, but they need to get the final OKs from the government and also try to coordinate with the Americans, Al-Ga'oud said.

Anbar was the scene of a bloody insurgency during the U.S.-led war in Iraq until an uprising by Sunni tribes, including Albu Nimr, in 2006 took on al Qaeda in Iraq -- the forerunner to ISIS, also known as ISIL.

U.S. officials maintain that Iraqi support for Sunni tribes going on the offensive against ISIS will be a necessary part in the effort to defeat the militants, who refer to themselves as the Islamic State.

In a news conference this week, Gen. Martin Dempsey, the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, signaled the possibility of the new role when he said the Iraqi government had not yet requested U.S. military support in efforts to defend a Sunni tribe that has suffered mass executions at the hands of ISIS militants.

"That's why we need to expand the train-advise-and-assist mission into the ... Anbar Province," Dempsey said. "But the precondition for that is that the government of Iraq is willing to arm the tribes."

Dempsey said the United States had "positive indications" the Iraqi government was prepared to do that but had not yet acted.

There is no indication from Pentagon officials on when such a mission could begin.

Public executions, mass graves

The abduction and suspected killings follow reports this week of public executions and the discovery of mass graves containing the bodies of tribesmen killed by ISIS.

The bodies of an estimated 200 members of Albu Nimr were found in a mass grave just outside Hit, a senior Iraqi security official told CNN. The tribesmen were captured by ISIS fighters after it took control of the area, the official said.

Another 48 tribesmen were marched through the streets of Hit before they were publicly executed, the official said.

And a mass grave was found in nearby Ramadi, according to Iraqi media accounts. Video of those executions had been uploaded to the Internet.

"We are deeply concerned by reports of mass executions of Sunni tribesmen in Anbar province by ISIL and strongly condemn the brutal actions that ISIL continues to perpetrate against the Iraqi people," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

"...ISIL's indiscriminate crimes prove, yet again, that it is targeting all Iraqis, regardless of faith or region."

Albu Nimr fights back

Albu Nimr is known for its fighting skill and resistance.

2003 Brookings Institution report observed that, though most Iraqi Sunni tribes were loyal to Saddam Hussein in the days when he ran the country, the Albu Nimr tribe had mounted a protest against the former Iraqi strongman in 1995 after the execution of a noted member. The protest was put down by paramilitary forces loyal to Saddam.

In general, however, Saddam respected the Albu Nimr.

Since Saddam's fall, they've been tapped to oppose al Qaeda in Iraq. They were also part of last year's Sunni uprising against the former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and his Shiite-dominated government.

They have been fighting ISIS but say they haven't received much support from the Iraqi government and international coalition members.

Rush hour jihad! ISIS militants practice abseiling from a motorway bridge in Iraqi city of Mosul oblivious to passing traffic

Masked ISIS fighters abseiled from a motorway bridge, landing in the middle of a road in the city of Mosul, Iraq, as cars and buses calmly drove by. Dozens of armed terror group members took part in the training drill today in the Iraqi city, which is the largest under ISIS control. The exercise follows days of mass killings in Syria and Iraq, including up to 300 members of one Sunni tribe who were brutally murdered.

The problem here is there is s Shia government in Bhagdad that cares little if the Sunnis are wiped out. They have the same attitude as the Turks did as they watched a city destroyed because they hate both sides and see the fight as enemies fighting.

The National Front. They are a political party/group and they have similar groups which go by the same name in France and other European countries.

I am sorry for posting this. Lots of my Aunts and uncles live there at that place (UK) you folks are talking about?? Now tell me then why are they not changed then? They are good Muslims and they care about everyone.  They all respect every other religion just like all Muslims do with the exception of terrorists, anyway terrorists are not Muslims in the first place. Brothers please believe me that if we as Muslims do not treat Hindus or any other religion with proper love and respect then how can we enter paradise, becuz that is one of the requirement from God, Allah stated a few times in the holy Quran to respect all the religions and to respect all the man kind and if any terrorist kills one human being it is like killing the whole mankind that is what Allah says in holy Quran. People are misunderstanding the meaning of the word Jihad. The Arabic word Jihad means to protect just like we say may God protect you and may you reach your house safely. It does not mean to kill any one. How I wish that I can forward you the Video of Dr.Zakir Naik who clearly explains about the word Jihad. Jihad has many meanings that I myself did not know. Yes we do not like some Mullahs who are taking Islam in their own hands and trying to change our religion. But they cannot do it becuz Allah will not let them. You know something most of my good friends are all Hindus and so are my Dad's friends and we love them and they love us too. We are just like Sisters. We never force them to change their religion and they never force us to change our religion we all respect each other's that is why we are maintaining friendship since I was in High School. My Dads families and my Mom's families and my in-laws I mean there are tons of people having lots of Hindu and Christian friends. My Kids friends mostly are Christians and we respect them and care for them and love them, some even address me as Mom. BTW do you folks know who created ISIS? and yes death to ISIS. Please think wisely then you will figure out who created ISIS, who is gonna benefit by ISIS?? Not Muslims, becuz it is hurting us very badly. Please I apologize if I have written anything wrong here. Yes I am a woman and I am apologizing becuz I do not like to hurt anyone, just in case if anyone is hurt becuz of me. I am sorry then. Please do not get upset with me Brothers.  And Brother/Moderator Riffraff if you feel that my post is not in good taste pls feel free to delete it. I trust your judgement. Thanks.

First, there is no apologizing for having opinions. Secondly, your aunts and extended family living in a place does not negate an odium that persiste there because of the theology of some muslims in the area. These Muslims harassed my sister terribly in that place calling her horrible names and such when she visited the area as  tourist. It is clear that it represents a problem for the brits also because my friend told me he was there taking pictures and the police followed and pulled him over. That is all because of fellows like Chaudry. He is a rotten dirty, odious bitch. I wonder how he would like it if Christians wage Jihad on his ass as he defines it.

I also heard the cleric you speak of many times. That fellow is as slippery and an eel and duplicitious as a copy machine. I know you have some reverence for him but that does not mean I cannot speak my mind also. Indeed he is very bright but it is fellows like him who say the US bombed the WTC that clouds minds. He also said that Ben Laden was fighting the terrorist so he cannot condemn him. The terrorist is us! It is muslims like him with the competence to speak eloquently and who garner huge following that engender the fear in yourng muslims that they are under siege.

As for your assertion by inference that the US Created ISIS; it  is baloney. I think you need to go and do the research youself in an impartial way and ferret out a clear understanding of this group. What hurts muslims is the dependency on the recieved wisdom of authorative figures in their community and not independent schollary inquiry as is necessary in any community for it to grow. You have to question and seek answers yourself.

Actually, islam has a history in its early years od questioning and inquiry. Now it quakes under the influence of authorities with confusing and differing  views of the laes and that makes for terrable understanding of legal texts, sacred or not. One has to read them by themselves as one would a text book. I magine if one practiced medicine of physics as one practices religion. We would be in the dark ages. A note here, Avicenna the great doctor and father on modern medicine failed  to see more than he saw becase he was contrained by taboo of cutting a corpse. Had he done so he would have confirmed mush of what he assumed was the case.

I appreciate your courage for coming here to postyour views but I do not like whimpy women who apologize all the time for having opinions. Speak your truths quietly and clearly as one well known track proclaim. It is the only real possession you have. No need to worry if you offend anyone.

(CNN) -- ISIS militants killed more than 300 members of a Sunni tribe in a recent series of executions, the Iraqi government said Monday.

Some of the 322 people executed were women and children, Iraq's Ministry of Human Rights said. The dead belonged to the Albu Nimr tribe, known for its fighting skill.
