Corona Invitational football tournament… Riddim Squad survive Eastveldt scare, Tigers claw Camptown, GFC evade Police

Game one: Riddim Squad 2-1 Eastveldt
Sunday night proved to be one of the more exciting nights in the Petra/Corona invitational football tournament that is being competed solely at the Georgetown Football Club ground. The first match of the triple header saw Riddim Squad battling a youthful Eastveldt team. Riddim Squad won that game 2-1. From the first whistle Riddim squad showed that they were the better side by producing wave after attacking wave. But, their finishing left much to be desired as the wingers who got in behind the defence no less than 10 times in the first half, failed to convert any of the chances into goals; as a result, Eastveldt capitalized on the high pressed Riddim squad employed through a counterattack and scored in the 26th minute through Marlon Charles.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Eastveldt continued to lead and although they defended resolutely with everyone behind, Riddim squad produced too many attacks to not have penetrated. Riddim squad finally found success when Dorville Stewart finished after his teammates has missed many chances, and levelled the game in the 61st minute.
Stewart kept his calm and scored again three (3) minutes later in the 64th to give Riddim squad the lead which they held onto for the win.
Game two: Western Tigers 3-0 Camptown
The second match on Sunday was business as usual for Western Tigers Football Club, which have been one of the more outstanding clubs in the Georgetown Football Association, winning a few tournaments. They seem set to add the Petra/Corona Beer Invitational tournament trophy and prize money to their list of silverware and purse respectively. It wasn’t a dominant performance by the Tigers as their coach Calvin Allen would like, but they came away with three (3) points none-the-less. Former Alpha United man, Andrew Murray scored a brace in the match including the Tigers’ first goal which was netted in the 23rd minute; his second strike came in the second half the 63rd minute. Captain Phillip Rowley concluded the scoring in the 65th minute as Tigers were contented with the three-goal margin and employed a defensive tactic afterwards.
Game three: GFC 3-0 Police
Playing at their home ground with much support from the fans, Georgetown Football Club had zero hiccups against an almost clueless performance from the Policemen. GFC which boasts a very good technical staff set-up, controlled the game throughout. Police were outplayed in every department as GFC got on the score sheet as early as the 13th minute when Benjamin Opera made little mistake in his strike. GFC breezed through the game with little headache and Dwayne Robeiro doubled the men decked in blue and white lead 10 minutes later in the 23rd minute.
Police had a few attacking plays of their own but none materialized into goals as the GFC final third stood firm. Robeiro completed his brace in the 74th minute as GFC reached 3-0 to virtually end the game.
The Corona Beer invitational tournament will have a one week hiatus and continue on Friday 18th August 2017 due to CONCACAF under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers in which Guyana will host group D from tomorrow August 9th to 13th.
