Pledges 6 months free membership as they prep for Pan Am cups

On October 14th 2017, Guyana will embark on hosting its first ever Pan American level hockey championships. The tournament, called the Indoor Pan American Cups, will feature two simultaneous competitions for men and women and serves as the Pan American Continental Qualifier for FIH Indoor Hockey World Cups scheduled for February 2018 in Berlin, Germany.
As the local male and female teams’ preparations heighten to compete at this event, Buddy’s Gym has partnered with the Guyana Hockey Board, granting them free membership for six months at the Sheriff Street establishment.
Head of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), Phillip Fernandes, explained that this is a very important occurrence for Guyana’s National hockey teams, “In the past we’ve tried our best to prepare teams with what limited resources we had but still encountered some challenges.” Fernandes further stated during a media brief at the gym on Saturday that preparing a top hockey team is more than just ‘technical and tactical training but also psychological competence, speed, endurance and strength training.’ The partnership with Buddy’s gym has now granted the GHB the opportunity to prepare the endurance and strength aspect of the national teams’ game.
Coach of the men’s team, Dwayne Scott, expressed the same gratitude as Fernandes, “We’re very appreciative to Buddy’s gym, and it will definitely help us prepare physically (for the Pan American cup)”.
Guyana has competed on three occasions in this competition, resulting in a 4th place finish in 2005, fifth place in 2010 and their best showing, 3rd place in the last competition held in 2014 in Montevideo, Uruguay; coach Scott is looking to go one medal better in 2017.
