Brilliant De Nobrega wins Grenville Felix 68-miler in Berbice

Brilliant riding by national cyclist Paul De Nobrega, who seems to be getting back to his best form, enabled him to easily defeated a top class field and take honours when the Annual Grenville Felix Memorial Cycle Road race was held on Sunday last in East Berbice.
De Nobrega, who represented team Evolution, was all alone as he stopped the clock in 2hrs; 42minutes and 53 seconds in the grueling 68 miles event. The race which was sponsored by the Felix family and organised by The Flying Ace Cycle Club began with a rolling start.
The cyclists rode off from in front of Felix’s former residence at Canefield, East Canje to his former place of work at the nearby Rose Hall Estate before turning around and proceeding up the Corentyne to the No51 Police Station then returning to the place of origin for the finish.
In total, 52 riders took part in the event.
As the riders were sent on their way a four man bunch of Walter Grant Stuart, Romello Crawford, Curtis Dey and Silvio Inniss immediately opened a lead on the pack. They continued to travel until they were caught about half way on the upward journey by a group made up of Andrew Hicks, Raul Leal, Andrea Green, De Nobrega, Christopher Griffith and Curtis Dey.
The battle continued and mini breaks were created by various groups of riders.
On the downward journey the group of Crawford, Hicks, Agard, Leal and Stuart were having it their way and was joined by De Nobrega.
Then a four-man setup of Crawford, De Nobrega, Hicks, and Agard broke away and were battling for supremacy until De Nobrega made his move in the NO19 area.
His sudden jump caught his competitors by surprise and they could not keep up, making it a one man show to the end.
Agard won the sprint home for second ahead of Crawford and Hicks. Leal, Stuart, Griffith, Deoraj Garbarran, Alonzo Ambrose and Dey rounded out the top 10.
Ian “Deaf Boy” Jackson won from the consistent Steven Fernandes to take the veterans category with Steve Ramsuchit third. Zaman Khan was again the first juvenile to cross ahead of Jonathan Ramsuchit, David Dick and Kerwyne Collins.
Dick won two of the sprint prizes among that category with Khan taking one.
Shanika Teixeira took the female event from Deance Welch and Nyanca Poyer.
The Juveniles rode from Nand Persaud and Company Limited on the Corentyne, while the females pedaled from Tain UG Berbice Campus to the finish line.
They top two club cyclists were Balram Narine and Raj Ramnauth.
The prime point prizes were won by Crawford, Green and Stuart with two each, while Inniss, Dey, Hicks and De Nobrega copped one.
Special prizes were presented to Teixeira, Stuart, Khan and cycling official Joseph Britton by members of the Felix Family.
At the presentation ceremony, Children of Grenville Felix- Joan Perry, Winston and Rawle Felix, relatives Calville Francis and Neil Cort Rogers and Former Mayor Claude Henry all spoke glowingly of the late Senior GuySuCo Engineer. Thanks were expressed to the cyclists and the hundreds of spectators for being a part of the event.
They expressed thanks to Coordinator Randolph Roberts, the FACC and Guyana Police Force for doing a wonderful job and gave the assurance that they will continue the partnership in the future.
Roberts thanked the Felix family for the faith shown in his club and undertook to continue to try his best.
