Bridge built a month ago collapses

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Region Six Councillors are calling on the Regional Administration of Region 6 and Central Government to launch an investigation into why a heavy-duty bridge has collapsed after being constructed just month ago.
The bridge was constructed at Sisters Village on the East Bank of Berbice by Contractor Mr. Dennis Tahal. Construction cost $3M.
Hazrat Husain of the Region Six Regional Democratic Council (RDC ) blamed both Central Government and the regional Administration for the substandard work.
“It is the Regional Administration’s inefficiency and incompetence that sees so much substandard works in the region and no one seems to bother since Central Government shows little or no concern to works that cost millions of dollars going down the drain as evident with the Lonsdale Multi- Million Revetment which collapsed after construction by Resat Constructing firm on WCB”.
The Councillor noted that lack of supervision by regional engineers, work not done to specification and substandard materials are contributing factors that led to the collapse of the structure.
Also, he added that copies of the Bill of Quantity and specifications were not given to anyone from the community to supervise the work.
“Regional Administration always boasted that they go into the community where the work has to be done and explain the specifications but this is not the case to contracts on the EBB.”
Husain also blamed the NDC for not supervising the work and failing to report any discrepancies. He said that materials were given to people from the community from officials of the NDC.
“APNU is therefore calling for a comprehensive investigation to both the Lonsdale Revetment and Sisters Bridge to make its finding public and those found culpable should face the full force of the law.”
