Benn century propels Providence to nine-run win

Colin Benn struck fine century as Providence defeated Ruimveldt by nine runs when the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA) Sterling Products Ltd/ISG T20 tournament continued yesterday at YMCA.
Off-spinner Shawn Pooran removed Orenzo O’Neil (01) and Terrence De Cunha (08), while medium pacer Terrence Mootoo accounted for Steve John (01) to reduced Providence to 14-3 after they decided to bat.
However, Benn and Gordon Ross resurrected the innings with level-headed batting on an unpredictable pitch. Benn struck nine fours and nine sixes in a scoring 103, while Ross made 36 as Providence posted 173-8. Pooran had 2-21, while Mootoo, Danny Narayan and Almando Doman had one each.
Ruimveldt lost a few quick wickets upfront before Narayan kept them in the hunt with a run-a-ball 62. He slammed one four and five sixes before he was bowled by Benn with his team needing 11 from the last over.
Following Narayan departure, Benn delivered four dot balls before the last delivery went for a single as Ruimveldt closed on 164-8. Kelly Bovell supported with 34 while N. Persaud made 25 and Fiaz Mustapha 23. Benn crowned a fine all-round performance with 3-23 while Brentnol Ross had 2-27. Damian Walton and O’Neil had one each.
Previously Providence beat Rome Athletics by 158 runs. Providence scored 242-6, batting first.
Lennox Andrews made 93 from 40 balls with two fours and eleven sixes, while Benn made 43. Ryan Hemraj claimed 2-20 and Sheldon Chapman 2-42.
Rome Athletics were sent packing for 84 in reply. Hemraj made 23 off just eight balls as Dellon Walton bagged 5-9 and Benn 2-11.
