To me he is a mass murderer. He arrived to 50 million or so native peoples living in the americas. When he departed this life there were only around 14 million left. Since he came and led by example, everyone else came and murdered and pillaged and claim everything in the name of alien gods. As Menchu said "

Columbus did not discover America. It was discovered thousands of years earlier. His action led to the demise of the original peoples. Why should I celebrate him, Gilly?

Columbus did accomplish alot for his people.  Name another European who brought more wealth and power for Europe and Europeans than Columbus did. 

* You have to admire Columbus' sense of adventure.

* What if Columbus had been told:

Chris my bwoy--now is not the time to sail--you have to wait until we solve our other priorities--war, famine, poverty, crime, pollution, disease, racial hatred, ebola, etc, etc

* Oh well! It's not a holiday for me tomorrow.

Columbus started that. GOLD! GOLD! GOLD! It's unfortunate they became rich at the expense of the natives.

Cristoforo Colombo or Christopher Columbus was not the first person who discover the Americas, nor specifically the first European individual.

The First Nations - Native Indians or Aboriginals - were the first to cross from as far as the northwest parts of Canada and the eastern parts of then Russia for eons before Columbus to occupy the areas.

Columbus caused mass destruction to the Native Indians/Aboriginals with various actions by killing them for the joy of having fun, plus numerous atrocities.

Of course, "history" is written to preserved and perpetrate the actions of these activities while the true issues are held in seclusion, or in many cased deleted from the storage of history.

Well, if you don't want to celebrate him, petition the US government to abolish Columbus Day.

BTW, I agree with the points made by Storm, Nehru and yourself. In the greater scheme of things, however, Columbus stands out as a towering historical figure, nevermind America is named after another explorer named Amerigo Vespüssý.

There is evidence now that North and South America had a people who lived here long before the people from East Asia started to arrive.  DNA evidence from Southern Chile shows that most likely those people were from Africa.  They may have been killed off when people started arriving from Asia
