APNU+AFC condemns Rohee for attempting to intimidate youth vote

GEORGETOWN – APNU+AFC rejects and dismisses the condemnations and protestations of the PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee with regard to the Guyana Elections Commission working with the Guyana National Youth Council in an effort to encourage young people to vote at the May 11 General and Regional elections.

“The right to vote is a constitutional one and Mr. Rohee condemning an effort to encourage young people to exercise their franchise is disturbing and bizarre,” said APNU+AFC Campaign Co-Chairman Raphael Trotman.

Guyana National Youth Council and their financiers have every right to execute a campaign to sensitize young people, who, in many instances, are first time voters. The campaign is designed to educate young voters of the need to vote and be part of the democratic process of selecting a government of their choice.

Therefore Rohee’s call can only be interpreted as an attempt to silence the voice of young people. It has become obvious that the beleaguered PPP is afraid of the voice of young people who have had enough of their mismanagement and corruption. Young people have no confidence in another PPP government and Mr. Rohee and Freedom House are well aware of this and seem to be employing subversive means of intimidation in attempting to cow young voters from casting their ballot.

Further GECOM is a constitutional body that is insulated from political interference and bullying of the likes of Rohee and Freedom House and it is free to make its own arrangements to fulfill its mandate.

APNU+AFC joins with GECOM and GNYC in encouraging the young people of Guyana to join with all eligible electors and vote on May 11 for the party of their choice. APNU+AFC is confident that the young people of Guyana will overwhelming choose change.

Finally APNU+AFC explicitly supports the efforts of the GNYC and all other organizations and agencies engaged in sensitizing young people about the need to vote and stands ready to offer whatever support may be required in this regard.

Rohee has a point here unless it is a constitutional function of GECOM. GECOM should educate and sensitize its workers who are involved in conducting the elections at polling stations. Any other information to the public by GECOM should be broadcast publiicly as public service announcements. It is up to the political parties to educate and sensitize voters and groups.

The PPP is dead scared of young voters who don't care a bit about PNC-Burnham past, who are not racial, who think for themselves.

The PPP is counting on old people's votes, hoping that they would fall for Freedom House scaremongering and the Burnham bogeyman. Not all old folks are stupid, thankfully. They don't live in the past.

“Blatant attack on youth involvement” – Bond responds to PPP chiding GECOM/youth partnership

March 5, 2015 10:37 am Category: latest news A+ / A-

By Jomo Paul

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) Youth Leader James Bond says Guyana’s youth should play a pivotal role in the development of national policies and democratic processes.

This comes after the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Clement Rohee scolded the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for engineering a partnership with the Guyana National Youth Council geared towards increasing voter education.

Rohee at a press conference on Monday said “The organisation claiming to represent Guyana’s youth has no authority to do so, as far as the PPP is concerned this youth grouping is a creature of external interference through the LEAD ( US Leadership and Democracy) project and is nothing more than a group of partisan persons who are attempting to hijack the name Guyana National Youth council.”

But Bond in an interview with iNews on Thursday, March 05 said that the objection by the PPP/C can only be seen as a “blatant attack on youth involvement” in Guyana’s democracy.

He articulated that Guyana’s youth need to have a tangible amount of participation in the decision making processes of the country as a democratic state.

“It does not matter if GECOM were to go to the PYO (Progressive Youth Organisation) and work with the PYO to bring out the votes, I have no qualms with that. I have no qualms with any young person working with GECOM to bring out this kind of impact,” Bond said.

He contended that he could not fathom why anyone or any organisation for that matter would “frown upon such a step taken by GECOM to engage the young people. Young People are the greatest assets we have in this country let them participate.”

Bond concluded that Rohee was “off his hinges” when the statement was made.

“When the cadre of APNU MP’s is ready to engage with GECOM; nothing like the likes of Rohee can’t stop us,” asserted Bond.

When contacted, Chairman of GECOM Dr Steve Surujbally retorted that GECOM stands ready to engage any youth organisation, including those that are aligned to political parties.

“Anybody who asks us; if it’s the boy scouts, girls scouts, Muslim youths, Hindu youths, Ghandi youths, whoever. I am tempted to say even the PYO and the GYSM. Anybody who asks us….whoever wants us to speak with them, we will speak,” Dr Surujbally told iNews.

Meanwhile, APNU/AFC in a joint statement said that its rejects and dismisses the condemnations and protestations of the PPP General Secretary with regard to the Guyana Elections Commission working with the Guyana National Youth Council in an effort to encourage young people to vote at the May 11 General and Regional elections.

“The right to vote is a constitutional one and Mr. Rohee condemning an effort to encourage young people to exercise their franchise is disturbing and bizarre,” said APNU+AFC Campaign Co-Chairman Raphael Trotman in the statement.

The statement underscored that “Guyana National Youth Council and their financiers have every right to execute a campaign to sensitize young people, who, in many instances, are first time voters. The campaign is designed to educate young voters of the need to vote and be part of the democratic process of selecting a government of their choice.”

It was noted that Rohee’s call can only be interpreted as an attempt to silence the voice of young people.

“It has become obvious that the beleaguered PPP is afraid of the voice of young people who have had enough of their mismanagement and corruption. Young people have no confidence in another PPP government and Mr. Rohee and Freedom House are well aware of this and seem to be employing subversive means of intimidation in attempting to cow young voters from casting their ballot,” the release stated.

The coalition said it explicitly supports the efforts of the GNYC and all other organizations and agencies engaged in sensitizing young people about the need to vote.

GEORGETOWN – APNU+AFC rejects Young people have no confidence in another PPP government

If you think that this was said in front of thousands of young Guyanese, you would be wrong.  Every where in the world politicians campaign in front of crowds.

Only in Guyana does the opposition think that only press releases and press conferences are the key to victory.

Why don't you shut the hell up and stop talking piss for a change? You're going on and on about the opposition not campaigning and you don't even know what is going on on the ground. No wonder BGurd used to tell you to get out of your Section 8 apartment.

I see photographic evidence every day on social media of campaigning taking place at the grassroots level as well as with the youth who are eligible to vote for the first time. You are accusing the opposition of not campaigning and you don't even know what they are doing. You are out of touch with the reality on the ground. You're only doing this to hedge your bets so that if the coalition loses, you'll be bragging here with "I told you so." You have a defeatist mentality and want to always play the victim. Black people will never get up if they listen constantly to the likes of you. Riff Raff was right to call you out.

Get out of your house and do something if you so want the PPP to be replaced. Dragging down the coalition when you are clueless to what is going on will not help. Go and meet with the leaders in Brooklyn. I'll send you the $10 if you're broke and you can get a dinner from the deal.

All potential voters/members of the general population are registered to vote.

Guyana is unique in that registration is compulsory and the Voter List is extracted from this registration database. So there is in effect de facto compulsory voter registration for everyone.

I just happen to be visiting when the registration was going on in my hood and went through the process, got a local ID card. Does that mean I could vote?

It means that your name should appear on the Official List of Electors and yes you should be able to vote just fine.

Look up your name here:

http://www.gecom.org.gy/PLE2015.html

Tell me if you find it.

P.S....That List is dated to January 30th 2015. So any registrations close to or after that date may not be there but should be on the Official List when they publish that.

Druggie is your hero.  Hmmm a staunch PPP man.

Druggie did nothing but make himself look like an idiot which is why he no longer posts.

Any way Mars if the PPP wins don't blame them or Guyanese.  Blame your friends who think that press releases and press conferences will win elections.

And don't blame me either!

I SUPPORT THE GNYC “VOTE LIKE A BOSS CAMPAIGN”

MARCH 6, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER LETTERS

Dear Editor
I write to express my support for the “Vote Like A Boss” campaign. I believe that this kind of initiative is needed to help propel young people to the upcoming polls and encourage them to be meaningfully involved in the local politics. As one who has been, and continues to be, actively involved in campaigns aimed at engaging youths in the local political process, I know the real value and importance of campaigns of this nature. I am, therefore, confused and shocked to learn of the PPP/C’s apparent non-support for such initiatives. On one hand we blame youths for not going to the polls and on the other, we seem to care less about supporting sensible initiatives to help these very young people make informed political decisions and become meaningfully engaged in the electoral process.
The PNCR, as a political party, has over the years taken a number of steps to engage young people and encourage their participation in the voting process. Of course many of these initiatives were branded partisan because they were being promoted and funded by the PNCR. However, one cannot deny that the approaches undertaken by many of these initiatives, hinged mostly on core values and principles of democracy and good citizenship rather than on a purely bias political objective. I can speak definitively on matters such as these, as I was intimately involved in and led many of these initiatives, which were grass roots in nature. I, therefore, applaud GECOM’s efforts to engage Guyana’s youth and to provide support to help these young people to become more evocatively involved in, and remain connected to, the local political process. Guyana’s future depends on the involvement of all people especially its youth. It is, therefore, incumbent upon all of us to take meaningful action to ensure that young people turn out to vote in the May 11 elections and also to ensure that these youths remain engaged in the political process. Their involvement matters!
Shame on the PPP/C for attacking any organization which is trying to increase voter participation among young people. The leadership and members of the Guyana National Youth Council should be commended for taking on this initiative and making their stake in the upcoming elections known. The PPP’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee, should be ashamed of his retarded approach to this important matter and also for attacking the credibility, and name of the GNYC. The PPP’s posture of questioning the intention of the organization is consistent with its treatment of Guyanese youth over the last two decades. According to Mr. Rohee and the PPP, the GNYC is a “self-anointed” authority which claims to represent Guyana’s youth. Rohee also described the organization as “a creature of external interference, through the LEAP project”. It is sad to see a government take such a deliberate decision to describe its youth in such miniscule and degrading terms. If this is the way the PPP views Guyana’s youth why then should they expect these young people to vote for them?
Let me close by urging all of us to take decisive action to counsel our young people on the importance of voting this and every elections to come. Guyana’s success and future depends on how informed and prepared its young people are to take up leadership roles in the nation. Participating in National and Regional Elections is a demonstration of good citizenship and being a good citizen is essential requirement for national leadership or public office. Let’s help our young people get there. Youth Vote Matters! Youth Vote is Boss! Because We Care! Who Cares If The PPP Is Scared! Let us support and encourage a massive youth turn out in the up-coming May 11 National and Regional Elections.
