Opposition leader’s sister succumbs to cancer

Former diplomat, Yvonne Mbozi died yesterday at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital, after a period of illness. She was 79.

A sister of Leader of the opposition Brigadier (ret) David Granger, she served as Consul General in New York. She was Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ms Mbozi was married to a Zambian who subsequently died by accident. Soon after her husband’s death Ms Mbozi remigrated and has been living in Guyana ever since.

She mothered three children, one of them a daughter who is now travelling from Georgia, United States to be in Guyana for her mother’s funeral. Ms Mbozi’s two sons died, one of them in a road accident on Church Street, Queenstown, two years ago.

Last night, Brig. David Granger explained that the family was in no position to finalise details of the funeral.
