Exclusive: iRadio being sold to Caribbean media conglomerate

Dec 25, 2014
3

The Mosquito can confirm tonight that the local radio station iRadio is being bought by One Caribbean Media for a yet to be disclosed price.

iRadio is associated with the Minister of Natural Resources Robert Persaud. The licence holder for the allocated bandwidth is Telecor and Cultural Broadcasting Inc whose directors are listed as Persaud’s wife, Kamini Persaud, who is also the niece of former President Jagdeo, and Ruth Baljit of a New York, USA address. (SN report)

One Caribbean Media was according to its website “born in January 2006 from the merger of two of the region’s most distinguished and long-standing media enterprises, the Caribbean Communications Network (CCN) Group (Trinidad and Tobago) and the Nation Corporation Group (Barbados)…Caribbean Communications Network Limited (CCN) comprises of the Express newspaper, CCNTV6, and the Grenada Broadcasting Network Limited…The Nation Corporation is the parent company of Nation Publishing, which publishes the Nation newspaper and Starcom Network Incorporated, which operates four (4) radio stations.”

Group revenues for 2013 were US$85.5M with profits of US$15.6M.

iRadio has only been on air since March 2014 on 90.1FM with the tag line, “90.1 love FM, the heartbeat of Guyana”.  Telecor was one of 12 successful applicants for radio licences granted by former President Bharrat Jagdeo after the 2011 election, a move or which he was widely criticised for having ignored applicants that had been in line for 12 years including the publishers of Stabroek News and Kaieteur News and broadcaster Enrico Woolford.

Instead he granted licences to what were considered his friends and family including Dr Bobby Ramroop. “New Guyana Company Limited – the publishers of the PPP-aligned Mirror newspaper – was also assigned channels 91.1, 90.7, 90.5, 105.9 and 105.3. PPP/C Member of Parliament Dharamkumar Seeraj, was listed as the contact person for these frequencies.”  (SN)

Corruption exists in Guyana like in other Caribbean states.  Removing a democratic government and replacing it with one that has a long history of totalitarian politics and naked corruption is not the answer. The PPP government has done a great job growing the economy and lifting the living standards of the people. The deserve more credit for the work they have done.

You seem to have a screw loose and a few cents short. Imagine penning an important sentence the wrong way round. Since it is Christmas day I shall do you a favour and correct the mistake for you.

You intended to type:

Removing a government that has a long history of totalitarian politics and naked corruption and replacing it with a democratic one  is not the answer.

In response to your comment, may I point out to you that  we do need a democratic government to be elected since Guyana has been ruled by two sets of evil political parties from the day of independence from Guyana. The current day government is an extension of the previous ones, as is the ruling party. Guyana can only be salvaged by the AFC. Even the PPP knows that. 90% of the PPP's time is spent on attacking the AFC. The remaining 10% of time is spent on doing backroom deals with the PNC. Everyone in Guyana knows that. So stop laying the fool.

Mr.T

For some time, it has  come to my realization that most posters on GNI who support the PPP, might lack intellect similar to most in the GOG.

Instead of engaging in a rational discourse with another poster, regarding strong evidence  about the reality in Guyana, they post distracting and insignificant material.

Therefore,  it woud seem  appropriate to treat their posts as rubbish and ignore them altogether as immature.

This attitude might indicate many are young, don't fully understand the history of politics in Guyana and were  brainwashed by the Jagdeo/Ramotar administration.

These thieves are bare faced as ever. They think the do not have to answer because the Indian sheep will return the PPP to a majority. The opposition should object to this sale and warn the buyer than event they are in office this would be reversed. This is clearly PPP profiteering. That this fellow, already a pillager, so nakedly abuse the public trust is completely rotten. This is another church mice who became a fat cat on the PPP soup spigot. It is also manifest evidence of jagdeo crooked hand at work.

Why dont you stop excusing these crooks and try to save your own immortal sou. These thieves can only rack up bad karma points for you. They are remorseless thieves of the nations assets plain and simple

Robert Persaud might know the PPP has  a slim chance of winning the next election and is getting rid of his illegal assets, but the new government should still go after Persaud and the new owner, as accepting illegal property.

If others in the government should sell their assets, it might  indicate they know the PPP will lose the next election.

It is easier to move cash than a physical radio station.

The fellow is one of the worse of the PPP clan including that fat fellow from Lenora and ashni. He  possibly second in line after jagdeo for thievery. but what would one expect. They are family. They bare barefacedly appropriated three of the frequencies and have no damn shame.

Stormy,

Why don't declare yourself a candidate for the opposition? They are desperately looking for people. They don't mind recruiting from overseas. Many of the opposition candidates in the last elections were domiciled abroad.

You have the gall to talk about naked corruption by the previous regime when the PPP you support is ten times worse. Don't you bloody people have any shame? This bunch of PPP tiefmen are the most corrupt cabal in the history of Guyana. Yes corruption exists in the Caribbean too but not on the out of control level like it is in Guyana. The PPP has made Guyana the most corrupt country in the Caribbean and it's not even close.

You hit the nail on the head, Tola. Divesting ill-gotten gain is the new game in G/town.

There is soon to be a mad rush to convert hard assets into liquid assets. Chartered planes and trusted couriers will do the rest to "disappear" cash out of Guyana.

What I still don't understand is why the PNC and AFC did not form a coalition after the last election and installed themselves as the new government. Under the Constitution they were fully entitled to do that. Somehow I get the impression that neither the PNC nor the AFC quite understand the Constitution, which is allowing the PPP to take advantage of the situation. Every other democracy in the world knows that parties can combine their seats in Parliament to come up with a majority coalition and then declare themselves the new government. But in Guyana they too damn busy listening to the PPP's interpretation of the Constitution, aided and abetted by a corrupt juridical system.

Even the police seems incapable of investigating the government even though it is fully within their power to do so. But as soon as one or other PPP minister makes a phone call the police come to a halt in any investigation. Like the police force ain't get it in their head yet that ministers are not member of the police force and cannot give orders to the police to drip an investigation.

Is why Guyana get ruled by such a bunch of uneducated people?

Mr.T

Why the PNC and AFC did not form a coalition after the last election and installed themselves as the new government.Under the Constitution they were fully entitled to do that.

Can you please cut and paste the part of the constitution that mentioned this? Thanks.

Guyana does not have as much corruption as made out.  There is also incompetency.  The PPP is not a corrupt Govt, the accusers have corrupt minds.  I mean, who the hell is flour boy to talk anyway.

Before the 2011 elections, you were an AFC supporter who was labeling the PPP as the most corrupt government in the history of Guyana. Admittedly, you received a contract from the PPP and your impression of the PPP has changed drastically. Tell us if the PPP has suddenly stopped being corrupt overnight or it's the blood money that you got from them that has turned them into angels in your eyes.

Are you just stupid or are you just pretending to be an idiot? You are writing here are you a declared candidate?

I am a citizen, they are they government. They are to govern well or be questioned as to why not. I and any other citizen have an obligation to question. That is our duty. It is why we have election and why we inquire  and conclude who should govern.

It matters not where I live. The Chinese are flooding the place and they are being conscripted by the PPP to vote. Why not me whose people are the original people here?

how do you account for Jagdeo becoming so rich in 13 years when his salary was not even that of a day laborer  here? Where did the rest of them get their 800 dollars suit if not from rent seeking? Get real. Pradoville did not drop from the sky.

Stormy,

You have to be an ass to ask such a question. Do you think anyone who was the head of state would be living like a church mouse?  Jagdeo may have taken some dough for himself but who in shoes would not do that? Certainly not Ramjattan, Moses, or Granger. I've said repeatedly that there is a level of corruption in all governments including the PPP/Civic. I have never denied the existence of corruption, for only a fool would do such a thing. The fact remains that the  PPP government is less corrupted than their predecessor, the PNC who left office with the treasury empty.

Jagdeo is no longer the leader of Guyana. He as abided by the rules of the constitution and left the office of the president. He is not a Burnham who murdered, rigged elections, and demanded more political power. He left office in accordance with the law.

If they started office riding a bicycle and living in a bottom house we expect them to at least improve and own the shop.

But to the extreme ends of wealth that Jagdeo and his minions have accumulated? that can only be done one way.

through theft. Raw greed and theft.

billyram's low breed PPP 'intellect' at work - incapable of differentiating between correlation and causation

lissen up (and learn) klown . . . Guyana's economy was ruined due to Burnham's poorly-thought-out SOCIALIST experimentation and mismanagement, aggravated by rigged elections, discrimination and resulting brain drain . . . NOT because of PNC tiefin

BURNHAM died with little to his name beyond what one would expect a senior civil servant to accumulate upon his retirement; DESMOND HOYTE, like Dr.Jagan, was famously 'poor' when he died; even the notorious HAMILTON GREEN continues to live an ordinary life, and collects a pension

alyuh lang mouth liars and dumbasses doan even know where to go buy a clue
