Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy addressing heads of departments at the Guyana Livestock Development Authority

Newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy today met with the heads of departments and agencies under the Ministry’s purview in order to familarise himself with the departments and agencies under the purview of the Ministry.

In his address, Minister Ramsammy said that he is poised and ready to take the agriculture sector to greater heights during his tenure as minister.

Agriculture, he said must not only be seen as growing and supplying food, but delivering high quality food that is safe for consumption and healthy for the population.

“Food is not just something to fill the belly, food is an important component in the pursuit of healthy, long productive life…and therefore meeting those needs it would entail us developing and sustaining the new and improved crops and livestock breeds for the supply of a more balanced diet for Guyanese and other consumers,” the Minister stated.

Guyana, he said must not only strive to become food sufficient, but produce the type of food that will help Guyanese to acquire the average daily calories and micro-nutrient needs.

“And therefore, as the New Minister of Agriculture I would like to follow that approach … as well and develop the sector to the level where it can contribute more significantly to the economic development of the country,” Minister Ramsammy asserted.

He said he will be looking at developing farming across Guyana, where both traditional and non-traditional agricultural communities would be able to tap into the export markets and “thus transform into entrepreneurial activities”.

The vision for the sector, he said is for Guyana is not only seen as a producer of raw material but, as a genuine industrialized country involved in the production of value - added products.

To ensure this vision becomes a reality, Minister Ramsammy explained that his ministry will embark on the establishment of a National Think Tank Committee involving a wide range of stakeholders from both within and outside the agriculture sector.

The Ministry, he said has already begun drafting proposals and terms of reference for the establishment of the committee.

Minister Ramsammy also visited the Guyana Livestock Development Agency (GLDA), where he met with the agency’s heads of departments and managers.

He told the staffers that the time has come for change in traditional practices in agriculture and that Guyana should strive to shape its own future. In this regard, he urged GLDA’s managers to explore new and innovative techniques to further advance the livestock industry.

“So that work plans for the sector for the next year or three years should be driven by the determination to shape a new destiny for the agricultural sector,” Minister Ramsammy urged.

Against this background, he said that research and development would be the focal projector for the sector and “therefore a number of things would have to happen, including the training of more technical and skilled persons for research and development”.

He urged that, “Agriculture must be developed to the level where a large number of people can make a livelihood, develop enterprises and a spring board for national development in our country.”

Following the discussion with GLDA’s heads, Minister Ramsammy visited several locations in Region 6 where he met with members of the Black Bush Water Users Association and Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha, where several matters of concern were addressed including urgent maintenance and re-operation of drainage pumps in the Black Bush area.

Minister Ramsammy will also be meeting with residents and farmers in Hubu, Region Three tomorrow.

Over the past years, the Government has prudently managed the agriculture sector thus making it productive through the introduction of new technologies and innovative farming techniques.

Government over the next five years plans to transform the productive sectors with the aim of creating more jobs through the introduction of technologies, large scale agriculture and agro-processing and sustainable harvesting of the country’s vast natural resources.

This is an important question to answer and an important aspect of the answer lies in the fact that there is a trend of change in the demography patterns all over the world. The globalization process has significantly impacted the demography and ethnicity patterns all over the planet. As a result of this there has been a paradigm shift in the pattern of consumer demand globally. What it translates to in simple terms is the fact that most consumer trends are impacted in one way or other by the socio-economic and socio-cultural diversity of the consumer and the pattern of global citizenship. The world is now swept by technological innovations, gadgets, electronic equipments, internet, modern research and new developments. How does that impact the farm management responsibilities? This needs to be investigated in details.

Today's farmers need to build their future on a comprehensive idea of the global market economy, based on their past and present experiences. Today's farmers need to understand that the world is changing. Modern consumers are more educated and choosy in their choices for food and other farm products, as a result of which organic agriculture has become more popular. So modern farmers need to decide which form of agriculture they are going to adapt to in the future. One of the very significant impacts of modern health and safety issues has been the rejection of genetically modified foods, a rejection supported by a majority of consumers globally. At the same time, there is an increasing demand for nutraceuticals, phytochemicals as well as functional food. Based on these, food habit and consumer trends are going to change more rapidly than ever anticipated in the future. The farmers in the future therefore need to be well organized and educated to face these challenges

This is a darn shame to ask this incompetent fool to head a ministry when he was an ineffective Min of health. It just amazing how these fools are recycled. The PPP has been in for 2 decades and how much has Agri grown..not much.. for these dumbos Nehru and Rama to sing praises is reflective of their warped and sullen mindsets which nothing constructive to contribute. Nehru only experience re agriculture is the greens he purchases from the Koreans on liberty Avenue. Leslie Rammasammy is a total failure and let us see how he will make Guyana Agriculture take off.I have not seen any modern agricultural techniques being used and advances made in the last 10 years by now Guyana should have been a household name in the Caribbean for agricultural exports. This is a new time and soon a New Year you guys should quit posting the useless bull.

Ramsammy for minister of agriculture ? Man, this is a bad decision. He cannot tell the difference between sugarcane and rice crops, bush donkeys and house donkeys, mongooses and rabbit. Has he ever visited a cane field in his life ? Wish him well but I have my doubts.
G
Look what the ones who can tell the difference did?

It looks like Ramotar pulled names out of a hat when he appointed ministry positions....Ramsammy did a poor job in health and will do worst in agriculture.

He is a front page news man...big talk and little action...The first off the gate and first program that will die immediately afterwards.
In 2006+ he came out strong with front page news about suicide prevention, formed a national prevention committtee that vanished into thin air and today, more than ever, more youth are taking their own lives in Guyana.
His big talk about suicide prevention, also committed suicide.

Rama, me keep telling you ova and ova...its not good for you to start drinking so early in de morning. It make you talk plain stupidness.

Ramotar make the sugar industry a basket case in Guyana, now Ramsammy who dont know which end of the cutlass to hold to cut cane, is asked to turn round the Skeldon factory, but will instead make the agri industry the biggest shit-hole, with more unemployment.
Everybody and dem dag, including Rab-Bart, failed the sugar industry. They must live in neva neva land to think Ramsammy, with no agri experience, will do better.

The PPP see losing votes two election in a row, to care less about the average person in Guyana...The same bunch of thieves were shuffled around the minsitries. All they care about is filling their pockets. They must be pissed, now there will be some accountability in parliament.

If Ramsammy did such a good job at health, why are so many youth in Guyana still commiting suicide ?
He is one of those people with a US visa, who will leave Guyana immediately, when the PPP lose the election.
