AFC vows to investigate Amaila Falls Road Project

The Alliance for Change (AFC) is insisting that if it is elected to Government, contracts signed between October 1 and November 28, 2011 may not be binding.

This was emphasised by AFC Treasurer, Dominic Gaskin, at the party’s media briefing held at its Fourth Street, Campbellville, yesterday.

He added that an AFC Government will also be reviewing all large contracts like the Amaila Falls Road Project, to ensure that they comply fully with the Public Procurement laws of Guyana and offer the best value for money to the taxpayers of Guyana.

Gaskin noted that the AFC is alarmed that with almost 6 weeks to go before National Elections, the PPP continues to award significant capital works contracts with no care for the policies of the new Government.

The AFC welcomes the announcement made by Dr. Roger Luncheon on October 13, 2011 that “the Guyana Government is building homes for low income earners which could see beneficiaries contributing as little as $100,000 for the house and land,” Gaskin added.

He emphasised that after careful review of Dr Luncheon’s statement, the AFC is however, astonished at the fact that after so many years in Office, the Jagdeo administration only found it worthwhile to make such a public policy announcement after the release of the AFC Action Plan.

“The AFC will build starter homes for single parents and other vulnerable persons in society in every housing scheme being developed.” Gaskin said.

“The AFC is flattered that the PPP appears to be pilfering ideas from our Action Plan and supports the initiative since the final beneficiary of our strategies and public policies should always be the people of Guyana.”

Gaskin said that in this regard, all contractors are being cautioned to abstain from signing any new contracts with the government until after the elections. We believe that with six weeks to go before National Elections and the fact that we are in the fourth quarter of the Capital Budget cycle, this is not an unreasonable request.
