The AFC is bemused at the PPP's antics regarding the appointment of Speaker. They have to understand that the electorate has spoken and none of the parties should treat their mandates lightly, or believe that it can be bargained with, or compromised. The PPP has to also understand that there is a new Order and that there has been a change. They have to get used to the fact that they don't control everything any longer.

The argument that they are entitled to the speaker's chair based on Commonwealth precedent is a very disingenious argument when one considers that we are operating in a hybrid of the Westminster system where we have an executive president. Under the doctrine of separation of powers it is a nonsense for the PPP to want to control both the executive and the legislature when they only won the executive.

The opposition would be guilty of the greatest abdication of responsibility and betrayal of the people's trust if we gave up the Chairmanship of the Assembly's affairs to the PPP. The opposition parties formally indicated a willingness to work with the PPP government in a national-unity construct and that proposal was rebuffed. It is their insincerity that we're dealing with now. Ralph Ramkarran was a good speaker but the Order has changed and he would be out of place in the present situation.

The AFC has no weight. They should put their votes in Parliament where their mouths are.

This is outright ridiculous. The opposition parties are trying to run the country or be the government. They must realize that they were not elected. PPP/C got the most votes or seats in the house. It is not AFC or APNU. I guarantee you, with the next elections this situation will change. Guyanese are realizing that a vote for the AFC was indeed a vote for APNU who is simply hiding under false pretence. PNC will never change. Let’s not forget what Indo-Guyanese suffered during their illegal years in office. Today PNC supporters got the gall to scream racism and marginalization.

Like years in power and widespread use of corruption has caused the PPP to believe they are the constitution Big Grin.
For these dumb heads power is everything, never mind the will of the people or parliamentary rules. The fact of the matter is that the ruling party does not have the automatic right to install a speaker. It is for parliament to decide. And since the current parliament is not controlled by the ruling party, the PPP government should shut up and give way to what the majority in parliament has decided to do about the speaker.

You either just come from a different planet, or haven't looked at the election results. Parliament is not the government, and neither does parliament run the country. Parliament is there for check and balances and to protect the people from harsh and unreasonable government actions. Each and every member of parliament has been elected. So your statement to the contrary has is a sign of how out of touch you are with reality after nearly 20 years of dictatorial rule.

The electorate has spoken and has given the PPP the presidency with Veto powers and a right to negotiate. All the Members of the AFC are nimkumpoops so they would not bee dealing with the AFC. A party with seven seats will be shoveled under the table. The PPP has decided to open dialogues with the WPA to facilitate the passing of bills and in return the WPA members get to table their own bills on Wednesdays.. And you can take that to the bank.

All the AFC did was take away the majority from the PPP thereby neutralizing the opportunity for unchecked corruption. Thankfully they did not enf up giving the majority to the PNC which would have opened the door for possible PNC style corruption which is horrible since their record is corruption coupled with gross lack of progressive governance. At the very least, the PPP brought Guyana back from the dead.

But don't for a moment minimize the power of the AFC. They more than the other two major parties have the balance of power in their hands and I suspect they will use it wisely. The election for Speaker should be a vote by each member of Parliament with the complete absence of any strong hand tactics.

Should an MP vote independently, he/she risks losing his/her seat by Recall.

Recall can only be done if the MP crosses the floor or sits in as an independent...
The amendment was made when Trotman left the PNC and Ramjattan left the PPP.

Whine, wail and rant. Most of the votes were against the PPP. They have no mandate.

PPP= headbanging Guyanese do NOT like the PPP anymore. Only 35% of the registered voters supported the PPP.

The end result gave the PPP 48.6 % of the votes cast. Those who didn't vote has no say.. The PPP received 32 seats one less a majority and that gave them the presidency. You are a moron to think that they cannot rule. The PNC lost the election. The AFC was a no show.
It doesn't matter how many votes they have, they won the election. There was no conbined opposition before the election and there cannot be a combine opposition after the election.

Ramoutar has appointed an all PPP cabinet.

he appointing people to commissions and committee without consulting the opposition.

APNU has no mandate. Forty percent seems a minority to me. If you think thast 41 % is greater than 48.6 then you are ignorant and stupid...

The PPP for their own ends ought to support the AFc choice. It brings the best payoff since they will not have to deal with the PNC initially on all legislation.

Unfortunately they have no game theorist from among their cadre and will play the old venom and strategy to deny the AFC the post hoping it will payoff for them at the polls when new elections are called. That they will prefer to cripple themselves to cause injury to the AFC potentially speaks to how trivial that Party is at the moment. Their telos is not people driven but party driven. Were they about the best ends for our people they would take the AFC proposals to change the system where race is never integral to the equation of power.

Unfortunately, for them, their lack of foresight on the speaker post will be one where every action in parliament that is passed counter their initiative will mean another nail in their electoral coffin. The AFC has no option but to support their candidate. The choice of the PPP and the AFC is to put aside their need for power and accept what the people has done; demand consensus by giving us a hung parliament. Neither of them should get their way without seeking consensus.

In my opinion, a PPP's support for AFC will look like they are ganging up against the PNC/R.
Cheddi wouldn't have liked that so I think that Ramoutar wouldn't do it.
The AFC supporting the PPP makes it appear like the AFC is full of crooks.

The AFC ran on a platform of PPP corruption and jailing the PPP cronies. How could they switch midstream. The people who voted AFC voted to take the PPP behind the barn and give them a good cut-ass.

Maybe I am partial ... but I can't see anyone but the opposition getting the title speaker of parliament ... and of the two candidates put forward by the opposition Moses and Deborah ... I think Deborah is highly qualified for the task.

To me the writing is on the wall. Moses has already had his name submitted by the AFC as a MP ... Deborah who was an APNU MP during the last session of parliament is not on the APNU list of MPs for this session. This to me means Deborah got the nod to become speaker. There is no bickering between the AFC and APNU.

Common deduction leads me to concur that Deborah got the job.

Being inside the PPP is toxic. It is a corrupt and corrupting organization as it stands. It can only be detoxified from deconstructing its means to self perpetuation on the principles it presently embraces.
