Guyana’s senior Women’s team have made it into the semi finals of the 59th Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Championships and will play host nation Cuba in the Semifinals as they go after the gold medal. On their journey to the final four, the Guyanese team of Trenace Lowe, Chelsea Edghill and Nathalie Cunnings defeated Martinique 3-0, lost to the Dominican Republic 3-1 and humbled Puerto Rico 3-0, earning their semi finals berth.
According to GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe, the Men’s team encountered some challenges in a mix up with the team rankings. He said that Guyana should have been ranked higher than the other teams with the exception of the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
The mix up resulted in Guyana being given a lesser seed and placed in a stronger group robbing the Guyanese of a medal. Munroe has informed that a protest has been registered. In a valiant effort in the group matches, the Guyanese team of Christopher Franklin, Shermar Britton and Nigel Bryan lost to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico by similar 3-1 margins; Britton being the standout player.
The Guyanese rebounded to trounce Dominica and St Kitts & Nevis by 3-0 score lines. Team matches in semifinals were expected to continue last evening and conclude this morning. Singles action will serve off this afternoon.
