The United Nations monitor on extreme poverty and human rights has embarked on a coast-to-coast tour of the US to hold the world’s richest nation – and its president – to account for the hardships endured by America’s most vulnerable citizens.

The tour, which kicked off on Friday morning, will make stops in four states as well as Washington DC and the US territory of Puerto Rico. It will focus on several of the social and economic barriers that render the American dream merely a pipe dream to millions – from homelessness in California to racial discrimination in the Deep South, cumulative neglect in Puerto Rico and the decline of industrial jobs in West Virginia.

With 41 million Americans officially in poverty according to the US Census Bureau (other estimates put that figure much higher), one aim of the UN mission will be to demonstrate that no country, however wealthy, is immune from human suffering induced by growing inequality. Nor is any nation, however powerful, beyond the reach of human rights law – a message that the US government and Donald Trump might find hard to stomach given their tendency to regard internal affairs as sacrosanct.

The UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Philip Alston, is a feisty Australian and New York University law professor who has a fearsome track record of holding power to account. He tore a strip off the Saudi Arabian regime for its treatment of women months before the kingdom legalized their right to drive, denounced the Brazilian government for attacking the poor through austerity, and even excoriated the UN itself for importing cholera to Haiti.

The US is no stranger to Alston’s withering tongue, having come under heavy criticism from him for its program of drone strikes on terrorist targets abroad. In his previous role as UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, Alston blamed the Obama administration and the CIA for killing many innocent civilians in attacks he said were of dubious international legality.

Not surprising. Social inequality is a hallmark of capitalism. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The US in its self-appointed role of world policeman is spending $$$trillions to furnish its military bases worldwide, to make more sophisticated armaments and other military supplies, and to wage wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria etc. That money could have been used inside the US to alleviate poverty. Instead it's further enriching shareholders of the military-industrial complex.

So if Capitalism is so bad, how is it that all you PPP Commies flock to the West to leech off the fruits of Capitalism? Why don't you realize the dream of your God Jagan and move to North Korea, Cuba, Russia, China or any one of those Commie paradises? Bloody pack of hypocrites!

In the history of civilization there have been stages of development --- primitive society, slavery, feudalism, capitalism --- in that order, each with its own internal contradictions. Compared to feudalism, capitalism brought immeasurable progress to mankind while at the same time spawning uncontrollable poverty. That's the internal contradiction of the US and all capitalist countries.

Speaking personally, at one time I had indeed thought that Russia, Eastern Europe, Cuba etc were genuine socialist countries. But after their fall, I discovered through intense research that what had obtained there was not socialism but Stalinist authoritarianism. And, in retrospect, I think Cheddi Jagan's pro-Soviet politics was grossly misplaced.

For one thing, the Soviet bloc countries never permitted free movement of peoples and immigrants from Guyana and other developing states, contrary to what obtains in North America and Western Europe. That's why people like me couldn't go and live there, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Just as slavery and feudalism came and went, just as the Egyptian empire and Roman empire came and went, capitalism will reach its natural end too. Like all Marxists, I truly believe that capitalism will be succeeded by a more just and humane social order --- socialism.

For over 2,000 years Christians have believed that Jesus Christ will come back to rule mankind. Similarly, I believe that socialism will come one day and Jesus will be glad because he was against the rich oppressors of his time.

Stalinist authoritarianism is precisely what Communism evolves into when put into practice. Nothing but a dream as mankind is inherently capitalist by nature. So you clowns were parading through the streets of Georgetown in your red shirts, calling each other comrade and extolling the virtues of a Utopia that only existed in your brainwashed minds.

I guess you Commies all live in hope waiting for Communism to return but you will die in despair just like the Christians waiting for the second coming of Christ. But in the meantime you'll just move to the West and splurge off the Imperialist soup.

Ow brother, spare me the personal please. In the long view of history, capitalism is young yet, only 300-400 years at most. I don't expect it to wither away in my lifetime or in the coming decades. But I have the luxury to dream of a post-capitalist world. Not only me; look at what Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders showed recently in the UK and US respectively. Millions of Brits and Americans rallied behind their socialist banner.

Now, all Gilly's life he never owned means of production --- land, factory, shop, mine etc --- but was a wage-earner until he retired. A working-class man. How could I sincerely sing praises for corporate millionaires, profiteering shareholders and other capitalists who get rich on the sweat and labor of wage-earners? I have to wear my red shirt and workingman's denim and mix with my own class.

LONG LIVE SOCIALISM!

WORKERS OF THE WORLD, UNITE!!

Why the UN is investigating extreme poverty … in America, the world's richest nation.

The topic is, but one cup of coffee has taken it to another level. Bitching on GNI does not solve personal problems.

This article is a piece of trash.  If the US pulls out its funding from the UN, it will cease to exist.  More importantly the mandate of the UN is to serve as a peacekeeping mission.  If They want to solve a problem, they should go to Rohinga.  The US is doing just fine.

The poverty stricken population in the U.S. is based on lower income individuals who are recipients of Government subsidies for rent, food, medical, etc. The UN cannot change this, only the people themselves can change their dependency lifestyle. Obama created the handouts system and leave the burden on Trump.

Never mind the UN ceasing to exist, the way your hero Trump is carrying on and if not reigned in and placed in an asylum, the US as we all know it will never be the same.

The UN has been getting a free ride from the US.  Many of the member nations don't pay a dime for membership.  The US has been the financier of that lame duck institution for too long.

There are all levels of poverty in the US. Even in the paradise Hawaii I saw homeless people camping out on the beach with many living from the back of their cars. You and I could be could be homeless if we agreed with the likes of caribj and gilly and stretch our hands out for entitlements. Instead we chose to pull ourselves up by the boot strap. A concept foreign to those who continue to blame the "man" for their plight in life.

FACT: Gilly worked and earned wages until early retirement at 60 and after suffering a serious stroke. Gilly never took disability benefit, only a measly retirement CPP retirement benefit. After 65th birthday Gilly started collecting Old Age Pension. Don't smear my good name where money is concerned. Gilly preaches and practises HONOR BEFORE MONEY.

And to be fair to Carib, he said recently that he runs a business at age 60. I believe him.

Drugb, when will you stop your outrageous nonsense?
