I just don't want govt to embark on another pipe dream, giving out land like Burnham only to be burnt. Gated communities may not be a bad idea if it is more profitable than farming. Remember these folks don't have the necessary equipment/knowledge to be efficient farmers. It is like throwing a hail Mary in football, hoping that cane cutters suddenly become efficient farmers. Not because they are Indians mean that they will be successful. This is reverse discrimination.

Let me ask you a question. If some one rents a house are they being given the house free?

And how many people in Guyana can afford those high priced US dollar gated communities?

Those cane cutters who fail will fail. Isnt that the law of capitalism? You take a chance and it doesn't work, so you go out of business.  The fact remains that no one who isn't serious about farming is going to want to pay to lease this land. If they don't pay the lease they will be tossed off. Part of the terms of the lease will be to use the land for agricultural purposes and if they don't do this they are in breach so will be tossed off.

I am also willing to bet that a large % of the cane cutters will take the severance pay and use it to flee to Barbados or Trinidad or St Maarten.

Go ahead and build your US dollar gated communities but you better include US dollar priced security systems because with massive unemployment crime will definitely increase.  You will not only have the cane cutters lose their jobs but then will rub salt in their eyes by giving away their lands to wealthy people who will build their country homes.  A recipe for crime.

Giving free land to cane cutters is no good, they will flip the land for a profit,

I said that the land will be LEASED?  Now when you rent your property to tenants do you give it to them free, or do you expect them to abide by the terms of the lease, and toss them out if they don't?

The land will NOT belong to these people so there will be nothing to flip.  If any of them try to flip they will be committing a crime and will see the inside of a jail.

In fact these farmers will cry lots of technical, credit and other forms of assistance.  And what is wrong with them getting it?

Maybe you prefer what happened to the bauxite workers. Sugar collapses and the workers end up unemployed with nothing beyond a skimpy severance package.  Because that is the ONLY alternative. Subsidies for sugar cannot continue indefinitely.

You know what is amazing. I am the supposed Indian hating racist and I have some ideas that might actually help these people in the long run.

This has in fact being quite educational and I have learned a lot.

1. The PPP cares not the least for its supporters and will risk them being left unemployed so they can scream "black man a kill ahbe".

2. The PPP wants its grass roots supporters to remain as dependent slaves. They fear that if these people become independent and self supporting they will cease to support the charlatans at GAWU and the PPP.

3. The PPP elites are eyeing up Guysuco lands to flip for their ill gotten real estate schemes and don't see why a bunch of "ignorant cane cutters: should be allowed to lease lands that will block their attempt to at a land grab.

4. They fear that if Granger is smart enough to develop a scheme like this where most but not all of the beneficiaries are Indians, then they will not be able to scream "black man a kill ahbe".

The PPP thinks that poor Indians are collateral damage.

Nonsense, you are not suggesting renting, you said give away lease. There is a difference. Who will be responsible for paying the lease upfront? The cane cutters? From where they will get this money? Who will supply tractors, fuel, fertilizer, markets etc?  Will the markets be local(already saturated), or foreign( a pipe dream).

As usual, you pnc folks have not thought this plan out in detail. You just jumping up and down shouting out random solutions.

Druggie daily you communicate your stupidity. A lease does require the payment of rent.  The farmers will have to pay rent when they have access to the lands.  The lease will cover other requirements as well, such as using the land for agricultural purposes and barring them from reassigning the lease to someone else.

Your speculator friends of the Indocrat class will acquire to hold and maybe flip.  Given that Jagdeo will GIVE them lands as he did on the EBD little risk will be involved.  This is what you hope for.

I suggest to you that Venezuela ought to be a lesson. When 2% of the population think that they can control a country and ignore the rest eventually that comes to an end.  You will eventually breed another Burnham/Maduro type and it all comes to an end.

I try to school you over the years but like d2 you remain daft and hard headed.  If farmers today are not even using the land they have, why would they run to lease more land?  Unless there is a profitable market, farmers will not invest in any crop.

In addition, the discussion was not about established farmers, but rather doling out lease land to cane cutters with a hope and a prayer, no market, no financing to develop the land and no machinery.

And in another thread you wail that tiny Barbados can absorb double the number of professionals that Guyana can, with just 40% of the population that we have.

You know why. The foolishness that you wrote about. How will PPP supporters benefit from the Jagdeo idiocy. They should instead be demanding that he negotiate with the government for a more lasting solution.

1. Reduce the size of the industry to support local consumption of sugar and molasses as well as that needed for CARICOM.

2, Demand that those sugar workers who wish to be farmers be awarded lots on a lease basis with an option to own (lease payments being counted towards eventual purchase if they show that they are serious farmers). The government should also provide the training (yes with those agri experts that we don't have), credit and marketing support (yes those marketing professionals that we don't have).  This will increase the probability of these farmers succeeding.

3. Demand that the government assist the private sector in finding markets for the export of raw and processed food products in the CARICOM markets (inclusive of in the lucrative hotel and cruise sectors).

But Jagdeo is too racist and too contemptuous of poor Indians to think of this. But is what GAWU and others should be forcing Jagdeo to do!  If Jagdeo makes these demands what is Granger going to say? NO!  Then we will be just as bad as Jagdeo was when he abandoned the bauxite workers to starvation!

All your ramblings above is nonsensical and lacks credibility as it is not a tested approach nor can you say for certain it would be profitable. Jackass Granger has the correct idea, end government involvement in sugar and let private enterprise carry it forward if they wish. This the ultimate measure of whether sugar can be profitable in Guyana or not, a privatizing the industry.

On this point, I have to agree with Cribby more than with you.  Cribby raised some good points however, his racism gets in the way and, just like with the PNC, the right thing goes wrong!

No time to go detailed, got to go kech a plane!

You just cant avoid a beat with your racist shit eh.

Make sure the  plane don't take you to Bangalore, or the people you screwed,  gun kick your ass to kingdom come.

Now dunce runt, where did I make a racist comment?  On Bangalore, where did you get your folklore from...you fraudster...exposed!!

So how come you get kicked to the curb by Granger?  All them cussing BJ bore katahar, you pounding the pavement like a rebel without a cause!!  Granger not that stupid!!

Baseboard, why don't you take a flying leap in an empty shit trench, because you are spoiling the positive  atmosphere of GNI.

Take a break  from your PNC racism and  you might find you will kick your kids less often to the curb,   with your negativism.

You have outdone yourself on GNI and became insignificant. so take  a break like Gilly and possible come back with a name less Baseless. Maybe you might be appreciated more.

You are like my friend's ex wife who remember insignificant things from decades  ago. I am sure you knew this feeling personally.

Bhai, be more positive, because  it has a lot more benefits.

Seriously, get off your intellectual pedestal and don't drink when you come on GNI, because it shows from  your writing.

And how do you know that these cane farmers aren't established farmers? It is a known fact that the seasonality of cane means that these people have to have various means of income. Some of them actually farm as well, or are members of families where others do.

Those who aren't farmers will most likely not take up the offer of leased lands.  They will take their severance pay and do something else.

Maybe they can come live next door to you in NJ, playing their chutney and Bollywood music loudly and embarrassing you in front of those white neighbors whose approval you badly need.   Their daughters having wine down competitions for the whole neighborhood to see.  Your neighborhood being turned into Jersey Shore roti style, except there will be no shore.
