Those Hindus who do not go to temples or have anything to do with Hinduism but still regard themselves as Hindu.

Secular means non-religious. Hinduism is a religion. I understand some Hindus claim to be secular but aren't the two mutually exclusive?

Secular Hindus of Guyana are people who are ashamed of being Hindus because the Artificial Englishman West Indian culture looks down upon them as inferior but they cannot bring themselves to leaving Hinduism and becoming Christians.

Maybe they just not religious like people who belong to other religions are not religious....who are you to judge others?

There is no such thing as "secular Hindu". Either you are a Hindu or not. So you are saying that you got rid of your inferiority by being relabled?

Mitwah

I don't follow any religion. I like parts of all religions. But I do recognize that Hinduism is the religion of our Dravidian and Indo Aryan ancestors. It is ours to the core and no one can tell us otherwise

Then you are secular to the core.

I know what you're talking about and agree in part. Many IndoGuyanese have accepted the brainwashing to be ashamed of their Indianness. Many converted to Christianity for the same reason. But that has nothing to do with secularism which by definition is non-religious.

I believe if you convert to Christianity then change your name to a Christian name like Winston Benjamin but don't call yourself Beharry or Luckoo for example when you are no longer a Hindu

I have always believed that religion comes from within regardless of what you're born into or call yourself. The Canadian Mission Church was notorious for forcing people to convert if they wanted jobs. I know many who converted. Some in name and some who became more "religious" than the Canadian Church itself and milked it for whatever they could. What if you had a family to support, converting nominally was your only option AND you maintained your beliefs?

So, if I was born a Hindu and don't practise Hinduism or believe in any religion, I am a secular Hindu?

Says who? Is there an authority that decides what name a person HAS to use?

Okay then why don't you call yourself Muhammed Iqbal and then practice Kashmir Brahmin Hinduism and see if you would not get a fatwa on your head.

You are a secular Hindu as long as you do not convert to another religion.

That's your rationale? If people don't comply with your demand to change their names, you will put a fatwa on their heads?

It is not about me putting a fatwa on their heads. They should do the right thing and change their names to reflect the new reality of the new religion that they have adopted.  You cannot have your cake and eat it too.

Many Hindu men will be pissed off now. They marry Muslim and Jewish girls but in order to marry these Abrahamic girls they have to convert. But they prefer to hide behind the Hindu name to fool people that they have not converted when in reality they did.

I prefer to be labeled as a secular Hindu before you call me an Arab Dry Goods Salesman. Whew!! I can now stop stressing.
Does being married to a Christian woman change that secular Hindu label?

Who decided that that is the right thing to do? What does a name have to do with which god you worship? Do Muslim, Hindu, and Christian Gods recognize their devotees by name?

Sharukh performs Ganesh Pooja every morning. And then there is that Muslim Dharmendra.

Mitwah

Sharukh Khan and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam does not fit into Prashad's argument because both men claim to be Hindu and Muslim.  Both would go to Ashrams and Mosques. No Pandit or Imam will tell those two men to leave.

Did you switch your complaint from being about Hindus in Guyana to Hindus somewhere else in the world? I quote you: "Secular Hindus of Guyana are people who are ashamed of being Hindus ..."

Those Guyanese Pandits need to get their lazy behinds together and develop a conversion process and program and start converting people before it is too late.

Hindus do not actively practice conversion like other religions. However, if anyone comes and say that their ancestors were forced to convert and they are suffocating in their faith, they will be welcomed.

Mitwah

Hinduism in Guyana lost a huge chunk of people to Christianity. Those people are not coming back. This has not occurred in East Indian Islam in Guyana. The fault lies in the failure of Pandits to educate the people. Their job is not just to show up to do religious ceremonies and get paid. The time for Hinduism in Guyana to be like Orthodox Judaism and wait for converts to come to them is over.  The Guyanese Pandits have to get out into the public and educate the public on why and how they should become Hindus.

Bhai Prashad then you should speak to Hub Cap Daughter, The Maha Sabha, the Pundits council of Guyana and the Swami. Hinduism is rich here in Toronto and the GTA.
