Dr. Samantha Tross: First Black Female Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the UK.

Dr. Samantha-Tross

Only 6% of all surgeons in the United Kingdom are female, and Dr. Samantha Tross is one of them. She’s the first Black British woman to become a consultant Orthopaedic surgeon. Samantha was born in Georgetown Guyana on June 30, 1968 to Sammy and Gwendolin Tross. The second of their four children, she went to St. Gabriel’s Primary School before her diplomat father was assigned to England and the family relocated.

Samantha obtained a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery degree from University College London in 1992 and entered the male-dominated field of orthopaedic surgery. Her surgical training was obtained at a number of London Teaching hospitals including St George’s Hospital, The Royal London and Guys & St Thomas’s. She also received Fellowship training overseas at world renowned centers in Toronto, Canada and Sydney, Australia, gaining further experience in Primary and Revision Hip and Knee Replacement, Computer assisted Arthroplasty, Hip Resurfacing and Knee Arthroscopy.

Samantha’s practice reflects the skills gained in her general Orthopaedic training, where she has experience in diagnosing and implementing treatment on most Orthopaedic pathologies.  Her success is based on her high standard of providing excellent and efficient service for her patients at all times. She is a surgeon but a doctor foremost with a holistic approach to her patients.

Dr. Samantha Tross

Samantha is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Medical Case Reports. She has been featured in the Black Britannea exhibition in the London Town Hall in May 2008 and in the Liverpool War Museum in August 2009.   She was also featured in the  “At Home with Dr. Hiliary Jones guide to choosing your Consultant” March 2009 and on the front cover of ‘The Vine magazine’, March 2009,  in their Celebrating Professional Women issue.Samantha is also a featured consultant on the Total Health website and was profiled in The Black Powerlist 2011 and 2012 by JP Morgan and voted one of the 100 most influential Black Britons.

Samantha’s biography is published in a hardcover book titled “Samantha Tross – Surgeon: Black Profiles” written by author Verna Allette Wilkins.

Congratulations Dr. Samantha Tross on your impressive accomplishments.  You Rock!

Congrats to Dr.Samantha Tross. These medical professionals abroad cannot work in Guyana under a brain drain management system. These people are much more advance to even think of serving Guyana. Look who we have as Minister of Health? Volda Lawrence, a quack and a racist pig.

Well done, young lady.

GTAngler

As with Ameela Singh who is mentioned in another thread.  Tremendous personal sacrifices  are made for a person to achieve higher educational standards.

Some people left Guyana to study medicine in England, but their dedication was lacking  and some ended up as homeless alcoholics on the streets of London, where two died.

Congratulations to these ladies.

Guys, none of the two medical professionals are as young as you may be expected. I would have to accept that they are exceptionally beautiful and intelligent. From here on, you are totally responsible for your actions.

There are many persons of Guyanese heritage who achieved excellence in their respective fields of study. However this does nothing for the people of Guyana who continue to suffer under the leadership of jackass Granger. I doubt that Guyanese still in Guyana are sitting around feeling vast pride at the expats achievements, they are more concerned about the state of the country under jackass Granger.

The fact that Guyanese can achieve so much outside of Guyana sadly reflects on the successive governments who drove them out in the first place. There was a massive brain drain during the PNC era, during PPP time this continued due to lack of opportunity but those leaving were mostly the uneducated like lilmohan et al.

There various levels of education, in the past, a high school diploma was sufficient to be regarded as educated.  Today a bachelors degree at an accredited university is at the lower cusp of being considered educated. A PHD is the upper limits.

With regards to the PPP or PNC, both had/have their flaws, the PNC more so based on the massive brain drain that occurred under their watch.  The very nature of the Guyanese economy has much to do with the brain drain as it dictates the opportunities available. An agricultural/mining/lumber economy will not have sufficient opportunities for those with academic aspirations.

Actually you didn't give an answer to define the "uneducated",i am looking for deeper presentation.

take a peek here for the definition of education.

You asked me for my definition of "educated" and I gave it to you.  The site you posted is an opinion, just like mine. In fact the term "educated" depends on place and time in history.  If your goal is to validate your own shortcomings in this arena, I suggest you look elsewhere or be content with who you are.

Deryck the 52 year old filly lacks common sense. He finds himself stuck in a dead end job. He is like an empty barrel.... but then again you can use an empty barrel to make steel pan drums or a lot of noise.

In fact the brain drain was just as high under the PPP, but interesting so was the flight of PPP supporters to cut cane in Barbados and St Kitts. And to scrub toilets in Trinidad.

Of note is the fact that East Berbice, the PPP homeland, saw its population decline by over 25% under the PPP.  Why?

I take two vacations a year. Your credentials are impressive. How come you are still an employee and not have your own firm as a Financial Advisor?  I take 2 vacations a year  and they always seems to coincide with my absence from GNI.

I laugh when you pretend that a nation whose largest industry produces people who are waiters, hotel cleaners, taxi drivers, and hotel check in staff will offer more opportunities for educated people than one with a resource based economy.

Druggie your excuses are deplorable.  There is way more scope for highly trained technicians in the natural resource based economies than in those based on tourism.

Using your criteria then the PPP is a colossal failure.  In 2012 less than 8% of Guyanese over age 15 had completed tertiary level education, and in fact only regions 4 and 10 had levels higher than that.  In the famous PPP stronghold, region 6, only 5% had tertiary level education.

Even if we add post secondary education which doesn't lead to a university degree less than 3% attained this, again with only regions 4 and 10 exceeding this.

So less than 11% of Guyanese over 15 had completed any form of post secondary education.  Interesting to note that 16% of those in Region 10 had completed this, due to the high numbers involved in some sort of technical training.

Barbados had 17% with university degrees and 11% with other post secondary education.

Meaning that just under 30% of all Barbadians have completed some form of post secondary education, vs. less than 11% of Guyanese.  Antigua, which does NOT have a university available to locals (it does have off shore medical schools for Americans), has 22% with some sort of post secondary education.

Note that the PPP had been in power for 20 years when the 2012 census had been completed.

And what is a lie.

1.  the East Berbice population did implode under the PPP.

2. Loads of PPP supporters did flee to cut cane in Barbados and in st Kitts. In 2005 the PPP was still in power and over 60% of the cane cutters on that island were Guyanese.  The same article that you cite also makes mention of it, but I note that you don't show it.  Even now in Barbados cane stays in the field unless PPP supporters cut it.

It seems that ever since you stopped wearing dhoti and singing bajans, you have become delusional.

You really expect us to believe that a cane cutter, chainsaw operator, combine/tractor/dredge operator all should be educated people?

Do you even know how many UG grads are currently unemployed under jackass Granger? In fact Guyana has a glut of educated people with no jobs.

1. Incorrect about the reference to PPP.

2. Guyanese as a whole - from all ethnic backgrounds - indeed left Guyana for other parts of the world for various reasons.

3. The exchange of inhabitants from the islands to Guyana and Guyanese to the the islands existed for years and is nothing new.

4. Particularly from the 1930 many of the "Islanders" moved to MacKenzie where they were primarily employed at Demba, the bauxite company.
