Caribny - who is considered a hero in Cuba today Bishop or Coard?  Banna that hole getting very big.

Castro killed Bishop so if they see him as a hero what a set of hypocrites that you are.

They did NOTHING to rescue him, even as they fought against the US and Caribbean troops when they landed.

So why didn't the Cuban troops rescue Bishop?

VVP you are a communist fool who laps up all the lies that Castro tells you. If you have HBO on Demand there is a documentary on Cuba were Cubans discuss how frustrating life in Cuba is. Very reminiscent of Guyana in 1980!

WRONG. I left Guyana under Burnham and Stabroek News was very much there. What happened is that they eventually began to be printed in Trinidad, which was when they began to be more easily found, but they were in Guyana before Burnham died. Printing a few sheets when ever tey could find paper.

This morning at 7 o' clock Fidel's ashes were entombed near the remains of Cuba's national hero JosÃĐ Martí in Santiago de Cuba. A final farewell rally was held in that city last night. President RaÚl Castro told the mammoth gathering about Fidel's last wishes: no parks and other public places to be named after him, and no monuments, statues or busts too. No idol worship. RaÚl said Cuba's parliament will soon pass a law to enforce Fidel's last wishes. Picture shows a small section of the rally.

Hundreds of people wave flags whilst paying homage to the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro

Hitler did the same to his death....should you say hooray to him? Castro was a mentally ossified fool who caused great harm to come to his people simply because he could not bear to give in to facts that communism has failed an autarky is not possible in our modern world. We are interdependent and seeking to wall off one's self based on a dead ideology bury creativity. The comparisons are about her mention of "steel in character" not the racist utopian ideology. Castro was a narcissist and as all narcissists would broke no other competitive idea or leadership to grow in cuba. It remained a cocooned and stagnated state were people percolate in their imposed misery. There can be no excuse for what those people must endure because of the will of one man and his family.

Why doesn't the USA allow open travel to Cuba?

China is not a place poor Chinese want to be. My friend, a scientist at NIH said you need permission for internal movement. She told me that the bunnies we see running all around our homes where we live would not exist because some one would have made a meal of them. So needy it is she said that if you put your food down it is likely to be snatched away if you look away too long. People for the most part live in excruciating povery and even in Urban centers where life is good the environment is oppressive and living conditions harsh.

China exists on a hybrid economy. The south is capitalistic and the agency of the economy are friends and family of the central committee or political class. There people eke out a marginal life as a few get rich. China needs growth of around 10 percent yearly to get its people out of poverty  in 2030. Most live on live than 2 dollars a day. It cannot maintain that and is at around 7 percent now and that is sustained by absolutely devastating environmental damage as it tries to produce cheep products for the west. Is you need to grasp what china means to freedom, use the Hong Kong Chinese as a measure. They would if they could seceded from the mainland. To that end I blame the British.

Indeed Cuba suffers because of the embargo but the embargo is in place because of its totalitarian political and antagonistic political regime so close to US borders.

D2 there are place in the good ole USA you would not visit also.  People could write all sort of negative stories about the USA also....like 5% of the world population but 25% of the world's inmates.

All estimate is that China economy will surpass the USA in the very near future.

No, I ain't a communist sympathizer, it is just that we need to deal with the facts.

I would not comment on this statement you made it is not worth it...just think about the tyrant the USA supported:

I traveled this nation more than most. I have been to more than 20 this past election cycle and all by road because I have dogs.  I know where there are pockets of abject poverty.  However, nowhere in the US do the people rely on a measure of 3 dollars a day for food. It in fact feeds 47 million who do not make the 25k bread basket.

That does not happen in china where there are absolutely no social safety nets. Also, nowhere can the river or lake outside   homes spontaneously combust because of its pollution from manufacturing neglect. China is a different place. It builds entire cities and have them turn to ghost cities like kangbashi because the people cannot afford to come  it cannot support the the cost of living to populate them. Yet in other places the live in absolute squalor because it is economically viable.

The economy can be bigger but if it is built on the backs of poverty it would be one where the measure to the us is not possible. Chinese make iphones and cannot buy it. They live better lives only because they sell to the us cheaply. They create the fat poor Walmart crowd in the us

You should take t hat to heart when trump say NATO is obsolete and he would not defend US allies over seas. I am especially afraid the Russians will take his reticent to stand on the wall for democracy there and invade the Baltic states. What they currently do in Syria is absolutely sufficient to keep them at arms length.

VJ is also far from being a communist or a communist sympathizer. We disagree on Castro and the status of Cuba but I would not go that far.

Castro was reportedly cremated about a week ago with his ashes being at his funeral. How common or uncommon is that? I am leaning to believe that there were no ashes in that box. Maybe his body was flown to Russia. I didn't follow this week of observation but saw on the news this morning that only a state camera was allowed at the burial.

One of Fidel final wishes, no naming of monuments in his honor. He came with a BANG and left with a whisper.

When I first saw this, I was of the impression that it is no naming of any monuments after Castro meaning that no one, thing or cause would have a monument named after them. Just making such illegal is state abuse. Cuba needs to enter the 21st century instead of remaining in the 20th.

Way back in 1954, from his prison cell on the Isle of Pines, Fidel wrote a letter to his half-sister Lidia. He told her: "I have a heart of steel and I will be a stalwart till the last day of my life." He kept his word.

Making unsubstantiated guesses and assumptions will not profit you. Fidel died Friday November 25 and was cremated 2 days later, on Sunday November 27. His ashes left Havana the next day for a 1,000 kilometer journey to Santiago de Cuba. His funeral cortege stopped at a few cities in between, according to prior arrangements.

It is an open secret that Fidel had planned his own funeral in detail some while back. He himself had chosen that rock and the spot where it should be placed in that cemetery. I know these things because I devote a lot of time and energy reading about Castro and Cuba.

It's not uncommon for socialists to be cremated. Way back in 1895 Karl Marx's best friend Frederick Engels was cremated. So was Cheddi Jagan, a diehard Marxist-Leninist.

Gilly, my question was not about him being cremated but rather it is uncommon to have the funeral after the cremation.
