PPP Member of Parliament Nigel Dharamlall under probe following gun threat against diplomatic worker

Member of Parliament for the People’s Progressive Party and former Permanent Secretary, Nigel Dharamlall, is currently under probe by Police investigators on the East Coast of Demerara following a complaint that he used a firearm to threaten the life of a foreign employee of the IDB office in Guyana.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred just over a week ago after Dharamlall reportedly saw the IDB employee talking to his ex-wife in a car.

He reportedly whipped out his weapon and threatened to shoot the man. A complaint was filed against him at the Sparendaam Police Station.

Divisional Police Commander and Assistant Commissioner Marlon Chapman confirmed to News Source on Monday afternoon that a complaint was indeed made, an investigation was conducted and legal advice is now being sought on the issue.

He would offer no other detail.

The Member of Parliament provided a statement to the investigators as part of the probe.

But when contacted today for a comment, Mr. Dharamlall said “I don’t know what you are speaking about. I have no clue. The Police might be better to speak on that”.

 He then disconnected the call.

Why is he not being questioned? What legal advice is required? The police needs legal advice before questioning someone about a reported gun threat? Is the gun Licensed? Or is it another one of the free ones handed out by the PPP? Questions, questions.

The police are currently investigating a report of threatening behaviour made about a week ago against People’s Progressive Party Member of Parliament Nigel Dharamlall and the case file has since been sent to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Stabroek News was reliably informed yesterday that Dharamlall allegedly took out his firearm and threatened to shoot an employee of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) office in Guyana after he saw the individual communicating with his ex-wife.

Contacted yesterday, Commander of `C’ Division Marlon Chapman refused to go into details, stating that the matter is currently under investigation. Chapman, however, confirmed that a report was indeed made against Dharamlall who has since been questioned and has provided investigators with a statement.

“We are currently in the process of seeking legal advice which will determine the way forward in the matter,” Chapman said.

This newspaper was informed that the case file was sent to the DPP chambers on Friday, May 27 for legal advice.

Dharamlall’s lawyer Glenn Hanoman said in a statement last night that he and his client wanted “the matter to be thoroughly and professionally investigated.”

He said he has advised my client not to comment on the issue or engage the media so as not to interfere with, or prejudice this process.

He said Dharamlall “unequivocally denies any involvement in any criminal act.”
