Elisabeth Harper turns down PPP’s Parliamentary seat offer

Former Prime Ministerial Candidate for the People’s Progressive Party, Elisabeth Harper has decided that she does not want to serve with the PPP/C in the National Assembly.

In a brief interview with News Source, Ms. Harper indicated that she was offered the position as a Member of Parliament for the PPP Civic but has turned down the offer. She said she does not want to offer much more on the issue.

Harper served as Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs up until she decided to accept the PPP’s invitation to be the party’s Prime Ministerial Candidate. She was forced to resign from her position in the public service after she accepted the political nomination.

News Source understands that Ms. Harper was not among the first set of names selected to take up the 32 opposition seats that the PPP won at the last elections. Her name was eventually selected following several rounds of discussion among senior members of the PPP. When she was eventually contacted and the offer was made, she decided against accepting it.

Although, she will not serve in the National Assembly, Ms. Harper who also served as Guyana’s Ambassador to CARICOM and was a well-respected Diplomat on the international scene, told News Source that she remains committed to working for Guyana and serving in the benefit of the nation.

There are reports from sources close to Harper that she has not been comfortable with some of the positions taken by the PPP Civic since the elections. News Source understands that she expressed reservations about serving in a National Assembly where there might be opposition to government programmes and policies for opposition sake.

The PPP on Monday announced that it has finalized its list of candidates to serve as Members of Parliament. Former President Bharrat Jagdeo is expected to re-enter the parliament and lead the PPP’s business in the House as the Leader of the Opposition.

Former President Donald Ramotar who served as the PPP’s Presidential Candidate at the last elections is unlikely to take up a seat in the opposition and find himself junior to Jagdeo, who is constitutionally barred from ever running again for President of Guyana.

These are choices people have to make within their respective party. The PPP/C also have to make important decision to fill their parliamentary seat with a mixture of young, bright and capable individuals, male and female, and some seniors as well. I wouldn't be so naive to say they are not professionals. If you want to go that way, we can examine the coalition to see who are the professional that running the Ministry of Security with crime rates climbing, and who is responsible for bad state of our economy that consumer and business confidence is totally lost. This is just two areas of concerns to discuss while there are many more to opine on within the 100 days promise.

I think they had to get rid of Donald. I think Donald did serious damage to himself by pardoning that child killer even though it is not making big news.  No international leader would want to be around him.  Bharat more stand a chance.

You worry about one child killer and have no issue with 60 convicted felons that are back on the streets?

Why you think they were felons bai?  They said that these people were convicted of small time crimes.

So give us the list of  who, what crimes, how much time they were serving, and process used for pardons.  Did Granger go in to Office with a list already made?  How come he did this so quickly after getting in? Who recommended these people?  What criteria used?

Why was this such a big priority?

Was this in the 100 day-plan of priorities?

The media is sleeping and drinking the cool aid.

Granger getting a free pass.

Enquiring minds want to know.

Harper did not fund down anything.

She was a real Dud and was not offered anything.

She probably could get back her job now that her real people are in.

She joined PPP only because of the 235 acres and $$$.

No such luck.  Granger already said that those who play politics lose their right to be public servants.

Harper is trying to sell that PPP land to raise money to live.  She doesn't want to hear any mention of the PPP as she wants to know what level of insanity was she under when she gave up her job to be used as an Aunty Jemima negress.

However, she probably can do consulting with foreign embassies or even the Guyana govt.

Don't think so.  This is a female who benefitted immensely under the PNC prior to 1992.  By jumping to the PPP she will not be trusted.  Her best hope is some international job.

Since Jagdeo will be the Opposition Leader, would he still be entitled to a pension and a pay for Leader of the Opposition/Parliamentarian?

If he would be entitled to two positions pays, then he would be probably having the last laugh.

I think his perks goes away under the new Bill but I am not sure if he gets two salaries.

Here is an excerpt of the new Bill proposal:

Cessation of certain benefits and other facilities of former Presidents.

          5.    A former President shall cease to be entitled to the benefits and other facilities provided under section 3, if the former President engages in business, trade or paid employment or is convictedof a criminal offence for which a term of imprisonment is imposed.

the answer is if Jagdeo becomes an MP, unless he does not accept a salary, then he forgoes his benefits.

But maybe Jagdeo is now so rich that he doesnt need his pension, and will prefer to ensure that the PPP returns to power so that he can resume his Grand Theft.

Most assuredly his army pension and benefits will be no where near what Jagdeo is getting.  You do know that Jagdeo received a pension equivalent to what former presidents of the USA and Brazil get.  Even as Guyana remains one of the POOREST in the hemisphere.
