If they can get visitors to come back in large numbers, this might not be such a bad idea. Remember many expat PNC supporters will flock to Guyana to celebrate the return of dictatorship.  This can translate to regular visits over the years. However any money gained from increased visitor arrivals will line the pockets of Granger et al.  So it is a double edge sword.

Where would PNC supporters get money from... these people received the paycheck today to pay last week debts.

Visitors will decline due to Zika Virus.

North America Economy is struggling - no money. It's a fight for survival. Unemployment on the increase.

And these looser thinks about partying.

This is a myth man, I know many PNC supporters in NJ that are affluent with big house and lots of money to spend who have not returned in years. Many of them go to the Islands to buy second homes etc. Maybe with Granger in office, he can lure them back home just as the PPP lured back Indos who fled under the PNC.

All patriotic Guyanese have a duty to celebrate Guyana's 50th Independence Anniversary. The coalition has presented a $230,000,000,000 budget, out of which amount less than 1 percent will be expended for the 50th anniversary bash. Guyana's economy will get back some of the $300M as overseas-based Guyanese return with money to spend. The hospitality industry and retail trade in local products will bump up their sales revenues. In net terms, far less than $300M will be spent.

This is all a gimmick. Granger said from inception that he is out to get back the taxpayers money from what the PPP squandered during their 22 years in office. Al we see is larwah and and bigger larwah. The taxpayers money gave these idiots a 50% raise, millions on presidential inauguration, endless and useless inquiries, Moses road, home and office improvements, millions spent on pre preparation on this so call 50th anniversary, and now the $300 million allocation for jump up, looting and killing in the streets. Taxpayers money will also be paying to celebrate the release of more criminals as Granger promised. None of this money will ever go back to benefit the poor and hungry Guyanese. Granger has a finance minister who knows only spending upon his order. No patriots will ever celebrate wasteful spending on wasteful people like Granger, Moses and Ramjattan. These funny fellas will feed you poison in honey to support this masquerade regime.

Folks, this is from my good friend and a patriotic son of Guyana who travels there on a monthly basis. He never took up his citizenship in America because he wanted to vote. The last time he voted was on May 11, 2015.

Guyana spending over $300 mil on our 50th anniversary. Is it that big of a deal? ---- since the country going backwards.
Can we recognize 50 years of migration of Guyanese to all parts of the world. For 50 years folks born in Guyana leaving and settling permanently in neighboring countries and island not forgetting North America. We need to recognize the mass migration for 50 years and counting. Can we get $50 mil to celebrate this mass migration. Oh lets spend that money developing our country and create a state where we all will want and feel the need to stay in our Guyana. We have these power hungry folks spending away and our seniors and public employees working for chump change.
Everyone you talk to in Guyana wants to migrate ------ the cost of living is so high and the standard of living is so low. Can we spend some of that money on social services and not on Government officials salary and perks.

Question for all the whiners,if the PPP was in GOVERNMENT will they have celebrated the 50 th anniversary of INDEPENDENCE.

The PPP would have celebrated but not wasted $ 300 plus millions when the AFC/PNC liars declared that the treasury was empty.

These AFC/PNC fools do not value the good habit of saving and developing.

They only care about Fete and Massive pay increases for AFC/PNC ministers at the expense of the Poor.

ZERO of Taxpayers hard earned dollars.

Corporations and very rich private individuals would have gladly donated.

PNC is notorious for Fete and destroying any economy. Case in point, wasting $300 Plus Millions when they themselves declared that the treasury was empty.

They are digging a deep hole.

This is my final question, where will the PPP (if they were in Gov't) get the money to celebrate the 50th independence anniversary.

I agree with Yuji22, get the businesses to sponsor the celebration, sell the advertising contracts, collect fees from vendors, sell souvenir[not only cups]. REMEMBER the Treasury was EMPTY, Now them look STUPID to spend $300. millions. Anyway, there is a drought ,there is Zika, Georgetown STINK, Airport STINK, Crime is UP, and you want to attract tourists???

Django, your question is null and viod. It does not warrant an answer. The PPP celebrated independence in its regular fashion every year they were in office. On Guyana's 40th Independence, the PPP were in office and its was celebrated in a regular fashion. What would you think they would do on the 50th anniversary? PPP celebrated 22 independence anniversaries and it never sums up to $300 million dollars. NO, sir. People are really pissed right now and this is not the end yet. Isn't this a shame that part of that money will go to celebrate the release of more criminals?

If the PPP were in government all parties would then take the opposite side of their stance. Our compulsion to oppose each other just for the sake of opposing is our nemesis.

Today what is most important is that as a country we should be proud of Guyanese nationhood. A nation that should have equal rights for all its children and a place where bigots of all forms and color should be buried with the shackles that held us subjects and prisoners of a robber baron empire that has been unrepentant for the inhumanity that was slavery, the ravages of indentureship and the destruction of a historical people and culture that is the First Nations of Guyana.

We should all celebrate and show the world how proud we are as Guyanese; stand as one in a nation strong held together by tolerance, love and appreciation for each other.  Stealing a term from the great Nelson Mandela, let us be the “rainbow children”. Let this rainbow signal the clearing and a new day for Guyana, and we as Guyanese take this golden opportunity to celebrate the richness of our diversity.

When the day comes Happy 50th independence anniversary to all Guyanese!

A patriotic and responsible contribution to our discussion, Politik. Much appreciated.

U$1.5million is about U$3.00 for each Guyanese. That's next to nothing compared to the money that will come into the economy from visitors and local trade associated with the event. The fact that the PPP is complaining is pure hypocrisy. Most of the money made from the parties etc will be made by Indian owned businesses.
