FLAMBOYANT KISHORE KUMAR

How can one ever describe Kishore Kumar? Interestingly one can try to, but we must remember that he has not only been immortalized by his songs, but also by his talents as an Actor, Producer, Director, Script-Writer, & Lyricist. His movies continue to be popular even now on TV, as do his songs on both TV and radio.

We know that he was a prolific singer, and he also sang in many other languages viz: Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam and Oriya.

In showcasing Kishore Kumar, we will be featuring his songs in Hindi from the many Bollywood Movies, but before doing so, we shall be presenting a mini biography in this great son of the soil.

FLAMBOYANT KISHORE KUMAR

Kishore Kumar was born into a Hindu Brahmin family in Khandwa, Central Provinces and Berar (now in Madhya Pradesh). His birth name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly. His father Kunjalal Ganguly (Gangopadhya) was a lawyer. His mother Gouri Devi came from a wealthy family. Kishore Kumar was the second youngest of four siblings, the other three being Ashok Kumar (the eldest), Sati Devi, and Anoop Kumar.

While Kishore Kumar was still a child, Ashok Kumar became a popular Bollywood actor. (Later, Anoop Kumar also ventured into cinema with the help of Ashok Kumar). Spending time with his brothers, Kishore Kumar also started to take a keen interest in movies and music. He became a fan of singer-actor Kundan Lal Saigal, whom he considered his guru, and he tried to follow Saigal's singing style.

1) ROOP TERA MASTANA:

http://www.mastimag.com/download.php?song_id=11188

Roop tera mastaana pyaar mera diwaana
Your beauty intoxicates and my love is crazy.
Bhool koi hamse naa ho jaaye
We should not make any mistake

(Raat nashili mast samaan hai
The night dazzles me, the weather makes me dizzy
Aaj nashe mein saaraa jahaan hai)2
Today the whole world is drunk on love.
Aaye sharaabi mausam bahakaaye
This drunken season makes our minds wander.

Roop tera mastaana pyaar mera diwaana
Your beauty intoxicates and my love is crazy.
Bhool koi hamse naa ho jaaye
We should not make any mistake

(Aankhon se aankhein milti hain jaise
Our eyes meet
Bechain hoke tuufaan mein jaise)2
Restlessly, as though in a storm
Mauj koi saahil se takaraaye
The waves crashes against the shore

Roop tera mastaana pyaar mera diwaana
Your beauty intoxicates and my love is crazy
Bhool koi hamse naa ho jaaye
We should not make any mistake

(Rok rahaa hai hamko zamaana
The world is stopping us;
Door hi rahana paas na aana)2
Keep your distance, don't come near
Kaise magar koi dil ko samjhaaye
But how can I make my heart understand?

Roop tera mastaana pyaar mera diwaana
Your beauty intoxicates and my love is crazy.
Bhool koi hamse naa ho jaaye
We should not make any mistake

After Ashok Kumar became a Bollywood star, the Ganguly family used to visit Mumbai regularly. Abhas Kumar changed his name to Kishore Kumar and started his cinema career as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies, where his brother worked. His first film as an actor was Shikari (1946), in which Ashok Kumar played the lead role. Music director Khemchand Prakash gave him a chance to sing the song Marne ki duayen kyon mangu for the film Ziddi (1948). After this, Kishore Kumar got many other assignments, but he was not very serious about a film career. In 1949, he decided to settle in Mumbai.

Kishore Kumar played hero in the Bombay Talkies film Andolan (1951), directed by Phani Majumdar. Although Kishore Kumar got some assignments as an actor with help of his brother, he was more interested in becoming a successful singer. He was not interested in acting, but his elder brother Ashok Kumar wanted him to be an actor like himself.

This film propel KK to heights far beyond he could have imagined, the film was a run away hit, and fans of Kishore Kumar grew immensley......our next song came also from Aradhana.

"Mere sapno ki rani" That song was composed by Sachin Dev Burman and performed Kishore Kumar. In the film, Rajesh Khanna, the male protagonist sings the song atop an open jeep virtually chasing the heroine Sharmila Tagore who was aboard the toy train in Darjeeling (Darjeeling Himalayan Railway). R. D. Burman composed the song after his father, S.D. Burman, became too ill to finish the film's music. The song became a superhit in India

2) MERE SAPANON KE RAANEE KAB AAYEGEE TOO

http://www.mastimag.com/download.php?song_id=32424

Mere sapanon kee raanee, kab aayegee too?
The queen of my dreams, when will you come?
Aayee rut masataanee, kab aayegee too?
The fun-filled drunk song is here, when will you come?
Beetee jaaye jindagaanee, kab aayegee too?
This life will finish, when will you come?
Chalee aa, too chalee aa
Come here, you come here.

(Pyaar kee galiyaa, baagon kee kaliyaa
The lanes of love, the buds in the gardens.
Sab rang raliyaa, poochh rahee hain)2
Everything that is so colorful, is asking me
Geet panaghat pe kis din gaayegee too?
When will you sing a song on the river banks?

Mere sapanon kee raanee, kab aayegee too?
The queen of my dreams, when will you come?

(Phool see khil ke, paas aa dil ke
Blooming like a flower, come near my heart.
Door se mil ke chain naa aaye)2
By meeting from far, I am not at peace.
Aaur kab tak muze tadapaayegee too?
How long will you torment me?

Mere sapanon kee raanee, kab aayegee too?
The queen of my dreams, when will you come?

(Kyaa hain bharosaa, aashik dil kaa
What is the hope of a sweetheart's heart?
Aaur kisee pe ye aa jaaye)2
It could fall on someone else.
Aa gayaa to bahot pachhataayegee too
If that happens, then you will regret it a lot.

Mere sapanon kee raanee, kab aayegee too?
The queen of my dreams, when will you come?
Aayee rut masataanee, kab aayegee too?
The fun-filled drunk song is here, when will you come?
Beetee jaaye jindagaanee, kab aayegee too?

He starred in Bimal Roy's Naukri (1954) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee's directorial debut Musafir (1957). Salil Chowdhury, the music director for Naukri was initially dismissive of him as a singer, when he came to know that Kishore Kumar didn't have any formal training in music. However, after hearing his voice, he gave him the song Chhota sa ghar hoga, which was supposed to be sung by Hemant Kumar.

Asj, what was the name of Rajesh friend in that jeep as he was singing the song. I think in some roles he played the bad guy.

yuh right bai, I just googled and it was him

Sujit Kumar (died 5 February 2010, Mumbai) was is a popular Indian Bhojpuri and Hindi film star. Hardcore Hindi film fans of 1960 might still remember him as the smart hero of low budget suspense flicks like Lal Bangla and Ek Saal Pehle, but perhaps Sujit Kumar indelible screen image remains of the guy playing the mouth organ while driving a jeep as Rajesh Khanna serenaded Sharmila Tagore in the1969 superhit Aradhana.Hewas a regular in many films starring Rajesh Khanna(Haathi Mere Saathi,Amar Prem,Mehbooba and Roti),Amitabh Bachchan(the Great Gambler,Adalat)and Dharmendra (Jugnu, Dharamveer, Charas, Dream Girl) playing roles that ranged from the comic to the villainish, and sometimes, both.

KISHORE RISE TO FAME:

After facing difficulties in the initial stage of his acting career, Kishore Kumar achieved success as a comic hero with movies like New Delhi (1957), Aasha (1957), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Half Ticket (1962), and Padosan (1968). Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, his home production, starred the three Ganguly brothers, and Madhubala. The film is about romance between a city girl (Madhubala) and a car mechanic (Kishore Kumar), with a subplot involving eccentric brothers.

Music director S. D. Burman is credited with spotting Kishore Kumar's talent as a singer, and advancing his singing career. During the making of Mashaal (1950), Burman visited Ashok Kumar's house, where he heard Kishore imitating K. L. Saigal. He complimented Kishore, but also told him that he should develop a style of his own, instead of copying Saigal. Kishore Kumar did not have a formal training in music. He kept Burman's advice in mind, and eventually developed his own style of singing, which featured the yodeling that he had heard on some records of Jimmie Rodgers bought by his brother Anoop Kumar.[citation needed] .

Kishore Kumar yodeled in songs such as Main Hoon Jhumroo and Thandi Hawa Yeh Chandni from Jhumroo, Nakhrewali from New Delhi, Tum Bin Jaoon Kahan from Pyar Ka Mausam, and Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana from Andaz (1971), Thodi Si Jo Pi Lee Hai from Namak Halal (1982) are excellent examples of yodeling.

Zindagi ek safar hai suhana
Life is a wonderful journey
Yahan kal kya ho kisne jaana
No one knows what will happen in the future

arey o leiyo leiyo, oleiyo leiyo
oleiyo leiyo, oleiyo leiyo
oleiyo leiyo, oleiyo leiyo

Chaand taaron se chalna hai aage
We have to go ahead of the moon and the stars
Asmaanon se badna hai aage
We have to reach beyond the skies
Pichhe reh jayega yeh zamana
This world will be left behind
Yahan kal kya ho kisne jaana
Who knows what the future is

Zindagi ek safar hai suhana
Life is a wonderful journey
Yahan kal kya ho kisne jaana
No one knows what the future is

Haste gate jahan se guzar
Tread on life joyfully
Duniya ki tu parvah na kar
Don't wory about the rest of the world
Muskuraate hue din bitana
Pass the day smilingly
Yahan kal kya ho kisne jaana
No one knows what the future will be

Haan zindagi ek safar hai suhana
Yes, life is a beauful journey
Yahan kal kya ho kisne jaana
No one knows what the future will be

Maut aani hai ayegi ik din
Death will befall us one day
Jaan jaani hai jayegi ik din
The soul will depart one day
Aisi baaton se kya ghabrana
Why worry about such things
Yahan kal kya ho kisne jaana
Who knows what the future will be

Zindagi ek safar hai suhana
Life is a wonderful journey
Yahan kal kya ho kisne jaana
No one knows what the future will be

di di di, du du du

"Sitting on the wall of the studio, I saw a man wearing a muffler and a cap and holding a black stick. He was imitating everyone who passed [by], just like a monkey. When we went into the studio, the man jumped off the wall and came into the recording room. `Jo jo gane gatey the, unke satyanash karte huey, woh khud gana gane lage.' When I asked him why he was doing this, he said, `I am an orphan. Nobody looks after me. Please give me a chance.'" And saying this, R.D.Burman burst into laughter, just as one did after reading this interview (Filmfare, June 1984) because one could visualise the scene so clearly. For the man on the wall was Kishore Kumar.

Lovable prankster

And this is the persona most popularly associated with him. The lovable, endearing prankster with an incredible voice who pranced his way into our hearts with delightful songs.

It doesn't matter that many of the films that Kishore Kumar wrote, produced, directed, even edited and composed, not just the music but also some of the lyrics, have vanished into the box office incinerator. (He found the time to do this while singing around 3,000 songs and acting in 100 films). The few that have survived show that behind that adorable comic façade was a brilliant musician and poet.

S. D. Burman recorded with Kishore for Dev Anand's Munimji (1954), Taxi Driver (1954), House No. 44 (1955), Funtoosh (1956), Nau Do Gyarah (1957), Paying Guest (1957), Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967), Prem Pujari (1970), and Tere Mere Sapne (1971). He also composed music for Kishore Kumar's home production Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958). Some of their initial hits included Maana Janaab Ne Pukara Nahin from Paying Guest, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke from Nau Do Gyarah (1957), Ai Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa from Funtoosh, and Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si and Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958). When S. D. Burman was not on good terms with Lata Mangeshkar during 1957-62, he gave patronage to her younger sister, Asha Bhosle. The Asha Bhosle-Kishore Kumar duets composed by S. D. Burman also became very popular. Some of these include Chhod Do Aanchal from Paying Guest (1957), Ankhon Mein Kya Ji from Nau Do Gyarah (1957), Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka and Paanch Rupaiya Baara Aana from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Chhedo Na Meri Zulfein from Ganga Ki Lahren (1964), and Arre Yaar Meri Tum Bhi Ho Gajab from Teen Deviyan (1965).

FLAMBOYANT KISHORE KUMAR

Picturized over Rajesh Khanna (in the film "Kata Patang") as he plays piano at a 1970s Bollywood movie cocktail party, the voice of Kishore Kumar sings. "Pyaar diwaanaa hotaa hai, mastaanaa hotaa hain." Love is mad, it's intoxicating. The song is Jazzy sophistication, with a rumba beat and soaring strings. The lyrics, inebriated speaking of the fatal destiny of those who fall in love.

"Shamaa kahe parawaane se, pare chalaa jaa." The lamp says to the moth, move away "meree tarah jal jaayegaa, yahaa naheen aa." You'll burn up like me; don't come here. "wo naheen sunataa, us ko jal jaanaa hotaa hain." It (the moth) doesn't listen; it is compelled to burn. The melancholy fatal lyrics are sung as if laughing with tenderness to the sentiment. Kishore Kumar's vocals elevate the song to a timeless ode of the mysterious nature of life, joy, and love.

A laughing madness and joy, all in the name of the spontaneous here and now of the song. That was Kishore Kumar, that was his gift to Hindi Cinema.

(Shamaa kahe parawaane se, pare chalaa jaa
The lamp says to the moth, move away
Meree tarah jal jaayegaa, yahaa naheen aa)2
You'll burn up like me, don't come here
Wo naheen sunataa, us ko jal jaanaa hotaa hain
The moth doesn't listen it is compelled to burn.

Har khushee se, har gam se, begaanaa hotaa hain
With every happiness, and with every sorrow

(Rahe koii sau pardon me, Dar-e-sharam se
Behind a hundred veils, from fear and bashfulness
Nazar ajee laakh churaye, koee sanam se)2
Shun a thousand glances from her beloved's eyes.
Aa hee jaataa hain jis pe, dil aanaa hotaa hain
Destiny gives no choice but to fall in love

Har khushee se, har gam se, begaanaa hotaa hain
With every happiness, and with every sorrow

(Suno kisee shaayar ne ye, kahaa bahot khub
Listen, some poem voiced this very well.
Manaa kare duniyaan lekin mere mehaboob)2
The world might forbid it, but my love,
Wo chhalak jaataa hai, jo paimaanaa hotaa hain
The cup is bound to overflow.

Har khushee se, har gam se, begaanaa hotaa hain
With every happiness, and with every sorrow?

Pyaar diwaanaa hotaa hai, mastaanaa hotaa hain

C. Ramchandra was another music director who recognized Kishore Kumar's talent as a singer.[3] One of the most popular C. Ramchandra-Kishore Kumar hits is Eena Meena Deeka from Aasha (1957). Kishore Kumar also gave a few hit songs with other music directors; for example, Nakhrewaali from New Delhi (1956) by Shankar Jaikishan, and C.A.T. Cat Maane Billi and Hum To Mohabbat Karega from Dilli Ka Thug (1958) by Ravi.

Kishore Kumar produced, directed, and acted in the film Jhumroo (1961). He wrote the lyrics for the title song, Main Hoon Jhumroo, and composed music for all the songs in the film. Later, he produced and directed the serious film Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein (1964). He also wrote the script and composed music for the film. The film is based on the relationship between a father (Kishore Kumar), and his deaf and mute son (played by his real-life son, Amit Kumar). The movie achieved critical success, which perhaps motivated him to make another two films called Door Ka Rahi (1971) and Door Waadiyon Mein Kahin (1980).

Chingari koii bharke to saavan use bujhaa'e
If a spark flares up, then the rains might extinguish it
saawan jo agan lagaa'e use kaun bujhaa'e
But if the rains light a fire, who can put it out?
Patjhar jo baag ujaare voh baag bahaar khilaa'e
If the autumn waste lays to a garden, the spring will bring that garden into flower;
Jo baag bahaar mein ujare use kaun khilaa'e
But if that garden is destroyed in the springtime, who can make it bloom?

Ham se mat puuchho kaise mandir tuuta sapnon ka
Don't ask me how the temple of dreams shattered;
Logon kii baat nahiin hai yeh qissa hai apnon ka
It is not a matter for the people, this is a story for intimates.
Koii dushman thes lagaa'e to miit jiya bahalaa'e
If some enemy strikes you a blow, your friend will cheer your heart;
Man miit jo ghaav lagaa'e use kaun mitaa'e
But if a loved one inflicts the wound, who will erase it?

Na jaane kya ho jaata jaane ham kya kar jaate
Who knows what would happen, who knows what we would do.
Piite hain to zinda hain na piite no mar jaate
If we drink then we live; not drinking, we die
Duniya jo pyaasa rakhe to madiraa pyaas bujhaa'e
If the world thirsts, then wine will quench it
Madiraa jo pyaas lagaa'e use kaun bujhaa'e
But if the wine thirsts, who can satisfy its need?

Maana tuufaan ke aage nahiin chalta zor kisii ka
I understand that in the face of a storm, no one's force will work
Maujon ka dosh nahiin hai yeh dosh hai aur kisii ka
But this isn't the fault of the waves; someone else is to blame.
Manjhdhaar mein naiya Dole to maanjhii paar lagaa'e
If in midstream a boat rocks, then the sailor can cast it ashore.
Maanjhii jo naav Duboye use kaun bachaa'e
But if the sailor sinks it midstream, who can save it?

People will say things, it's their business to talk
Chhoro bekaara kii baaton mein kahiin biita na jaa'e raina)2
Ignore their useless chatter, lest the night never end

Kuchh riit jagat kii aisii hai har ek subah kii shaam hu'ii
Some of the world's tradition is every morning has an evening
Tuu kaun hai tera naam hai kya siita bhii yahaa.n badnaam hu'ii
Who are you? What's your name? Even Sita was slandered here.
Phir kyon sansaar kii baaton se bhiiga ga'e tere naina

Those who taunt us for being lost in debauchery
Hamne unko bhii chhupa chupke aate dekha in galiyon mein
We've come secretly and silently and seen them here, in these lanes.
Yeh sach hai jhuuthii baat nahiin tum bolo yeh sach hai na

FLAMBOYANT KISHORE KUMAR

In the 1960s, as an actor, Kishore Kumar built up a notoriety for coming late for the shootings, or bunking them altogether. His films flopped frequently, and he also landed in income tax trouble. As a singer, he had some hit songs to his credit, including Zaroorat Hai Zaroorat Hai from Manmauji (1961), Gaata Rahe Mera Dil from Guide (1964), and Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara from Jewel Thief (1967).

In the late 1960s, S. D. Burman's son, Rahul Dev Burman started patronising Kishore Kumar. Their first notable success was the soundtrack of the film Padosan (1968), in which Kishore Kumar sang the popular songs Mere Saamne Wali Khidki Mein and Kehna Hai. Padosan was a comedy film starring Kishore Kumar as a dramatist-musician, Mehmood as a Carnatic music and dance teacher, and Sunil Dutt as a simpleton named Bhola. Kishore Kumar's character in the film was inspired by the personality of Kishore's own uncle, Dhananjay Bannerjee (a classical singer). The highlight of the film was a musical, comical duel between Kishore Kumar-Sunil Dutt and Mehmood, Ek Chatur Nar Karke Singaar.

Kishore Kumar sang for all leading actors in 1970s & 1980s, including Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Dev Anand, Rishi Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff.

(Mere dil mein aaj kya hai
What is in my heart today?
Tuu kahe to main bataa duun)2
If you ask, I will tell you.
Terii zulf phir savaaruun
I want to adorn your hair again
Terii maang phir sajaa duun
I want to decorate the parting of your hair.

Mere dil mein aaj kya hai
What is in my heart today?
Tuu kahe to main bataa duun
If you ask, I will tell you.

(Mujhe devta banaakar terii chaahaton ne puujaa)2
You made me your god and worshipped me with desire.
(Mera pyaar kah rahaa hai
My love is telling me
Main tujhe khudaa banaa duun)2
That I should make you my god too.

Mere dil mein aaj kya hai
What is in my heart today?
Tuu kahe to main bataa duun
If you ask, I will tell you.

(Koii Dhund Rahne bhii aa'e to hamein na dhund paa'e)2
If anyone comes looking, they won't be able to find us.
(Tuu mujhe kahiin chhupaa de
Hide me away somewhere;
Main tujhe kahiin chhupaa duun)2
I'll hide you away somewhere too.

Mere dil mein aaj kya hai
What is in my heart today?
Tuu kahe to main bataa duun
If you ask, I will tell you.

(mere baazuu'on mein aakar tera dard chain paa'e)2
Come into my arms and let your pain find peace
(Tere gesuu'on men chupkar
Hide me in your tresses
Main jahaan ke gam bhulaa duun)2
And make me forget all the sorrows of the world.
Terii zulf phir savaaruun
I want to adorn your hair again
Terii maang phir sajaa duun
I want to decorate the parting of your hair.

Mere dil mein aaj kya hai
What is in my heart today?
Tuu kahe to main bataa duun
If you ask, I will tell you.

8) MERA JEEWAN KORA KAGAZ: KORA KAGAZ 1974

http://www.mastimag.com/download.php?song_id=42730

(Mera jeevan kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya)2
My life was a blank paper, it remained blank
(Jo likha tha)2 aansoon sang beh gaya
Whatever was written is washed away in tears

(Mera jeevan)2 kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
My life was a blank paper, it remained blank

(Ik hawa ka jhoonka aaya)2 tuuta dali se phool
A gust of wind came a flower was plucked from the branch
Na pavan ki na chaman ki (kiski hai ye bhool)2
Neither wind nor the garden is at fault here
Kho gayi kho gayi khushboo hawa mein kuch na reh gaya
Fragrance was lost in the wind, nothing remained

(Mera jeevan)2 kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
My life was a blank paper, it remained blank

(Udte panchi ka thikana)2 mera na koijahan
Even a flying bird has a home, I don't have any

Na dagar hai na khabar hai (jana hai mujhko kahan)2
Neither have I a path nor an idea of where I have to go
Ban ke sapna humsafar ka saath reh gaya
Dreams of my life partner, stay with me

(Mera jeevan)2 kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
My life was a blank paper, it remained blank

Dukh ke andar sukh ki jyoti dukh hi sukh ka gyan
Spark of happiness lies in sadness only emphasizes happiness
Dard sah ke janm leta
Bearing pain he gets born
Har koi insaan
Every human being
Vo sukhi hai
He is happy who
Jo khushi se dard sah gaya
Bore every pain unperturbed

(Mera jeevan)2 kora kaagaz kora hi reh gaya
my life was a blank paper, it remained blank

9) AANE WALA PAL JAANE WALA HAI

http://www.mastimag.com/download.php?song_id=11467

(Aane wala pal jaane wala hai)2
The moment to come is about to go
Ho sake to is mein zindagi bitaa do
If you can, live your life in this
Pal jo ye jaane wala hai
Moment that is about to go.

Aane wala pal jaane wala hai
The moment to come is about to go

(Ek baar yoon mili maasoom si kali)2
Once, I just met this innocent blossom
Khilte hue kaha khush paash main chalii
Blooming, she said I am leaving happy.
Dekha to yahin hain
When I look, it is right here.
Dhoondha to nahin hain
When I search, it is not here.
Pal jo ye jaane wala hain
This moment that is about to go.

Aane wala pal jaane wala hai
The moment to come is about to go
Ho sake to is mein zindagi bitaa do
If you can, live your life in this
Pal jo ye jaane wala hai
Moment that is about to go.

(Ek baar waqt se lamhaa giraa kahin)2
Once, this moment fell from time somewhere.
Wahan daastan mili
There I found this tale.
lamha kahin nahin
The moment is nowhere.
Thoda saa hansaake
By making you laugh a little.
Thoda sa rulaake
By making you cry a little.
Pal ye bhi jaane wala hain
This moment is also about to go.

Aane wala pal jaane wala hai
The moment to come is about to go
