Back in the days, teachers and students use to clean up their respective classes and even the school yard. Cleaners used to sweep and wash the floors and the toilets. I think that was once or twice a week.

We had to take turns cleaning our classrooms. The girls swept and the boys rearrange the desk and benches. No cleaning persons at my schools. Times have changed. I remember the school floor had a washdown every school break.
