Toronto Muslims create awards night to celebrate community

METRO TORONTO, DECEMBER 30 --- A group of young Muslims in Toronto is hoping to shed a positive light on the community by launching an awards night.

“It seemed that every religious community had an event to celebrate excellence, so I thought, why don’t we as Muslims have one that counters all the negativity out there and showcases all the good that’s being done by Canadian Muslims?” says Aazar Zafar, a chartered accountant and co-founder of the Muslim Awards of Excellence (MAX) program.

The first MAX gala, planned for March at the Ritz-Carlton, aims to recognize the achievements of Muslim professionals and students across Canada.

Professionals can be nominated for six categories, including Woman of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year. For high school and university students, six scholarships are up for grabs, including two valued at $10,000 each.

As well as professional or student achievement, nominees are expected to have contributed to Canadian society through volunteer work.
