In fact he is an indication as to why rounded personalities are crucial for overall success. In this day and age good grades alone doesn't guarantee admission, this being why the essay is a critical part of the admission process in the better US colleges. They want to see more than "I studied 24 hours and have passed double the number of subjects than I needed to, but I am a very boring person otherwise".
