This is a fair response to Carib's comment. Looking forward to his analysis since this is not only a condition in Guyana but even in America.
Binge drinking in the USA is linked to the same Anglo Saxons who taught Indians in Trinidad and Guyana do engage in this. They are known for this in the UK and they brought that habit with them to the cane fields of Guyana and Trinidad.
As I said this wasn't a trait which came from India. It was a habit developed in the cane fields. Binge drinking in the USA is highest among Native Americans, followed by white Anglo Saxons and lowest amongst blacks and the various Asian groups. Inclusive of Asian Indians.
Whereas there is a belief that there is some genetic characteristic that Amerindians have which reduces their ability to process liquor above certain levels Indo Guyanese cannot claim this as Asian Indians aren't known for extreme binge drinking.
The sugar estate did severe damage to the various groups who were trapped in it. It destroyed Afro Carib family structures and it encouraged binge drinking among Indo Caribs. The Portuguese and the Chinese left the estates quickly so were less damaged.
