Reply to "# Let Progress Continue"

Conscience is obviously a PPP propagandist.  Already, the PPP is smart to organize its people to influence this forum. Give them credit.

Jagan had coined the term "square pegs in round holes" to describe many PNC ministers. Manickchand is probably the squarest peg in the PPP Jagdeoite government with no background or experience in education. Same for Shadick at UG.

The problem with the propaganda piece above is that the PPP likes to use inputs to argue for progress when they should be measuring outputs and outcomes.  They are still grappling with providing furniture, books, toilets that work, water in the schools, cafeteria services, a diverse curriculum, teachers, and other basic supplies to have a semblance of a school. To talk of universal high school education in 2015 is an admission of failure. This explains my points above on inputs.

Some schools don't have phones, playground equipment, supplies, etc.  They have to sit and wait for the Region or Ministry to do it. I have visited several schools and were quite appalled at sanitation, environment, facilities reminiscent of the 70s.The problem with Guyana is that they don't know what "good" or "excellent" looks like.

In Guyana, most of our teachers are 2 year teacher training graduates.  Many  of these 2-year people are school Principals and deputy/senior heads. In the USA, these people would be lucky to get a job as a teacher assistant.  They cannot become a teacher in the developed world. All administrators in the USA would have at least a master's Degree in leadership to hold the position of principal. Teacher quality is the factor that is most highly correlated with student achievement. So you see the lower Third World level at which Guyana operates.

Manickchand would not know what terminology or things in education to look for to improve the education system. Most of the leadership in the ministry would not have visited other countries to see what quality looks like.

The outcomes or results we are getting from the inputs in education are very poor.  The majority of students are failing CSEC.  The ones they showcase are the "in spite of" students who will succeed regardless of the quality of the schools.  They are the gifted and the children of the well to do.  The masses continue to drop out and are condemned to laboring when they leave work.

The Guyana education system needs an alignment across the board but how do you expect the fat one to lead an effort like that. Given her performance at the Ambassador's house, do you think that lady have any sense?

I must say, however, that her recent looks, are getting closer to the glamour pictures she uses for press releases. Substituting the hugging of black children when she goes on trips is not a bad substitute for real progress.
