Oye Mars, you just remind me of something. Soviet Union had FULL EMPLOYMENT, free education, free health care, cheap housing and cheap public transportation. When Gilly visited Moscow in 1984 he took subway and bus rides for only 5 kopecks/5 cents. That was the upside.
The downside was authoritarian state control of people's lives, curbing free speech, freedom of worship and freedom of association etc. Not to mention the gulags, forced collectivization etc. All these things were exposed during Gorbachev's time 1985-1991 but by that time the system was already dead meat.
