You should take t hat to heart when trump say NATO is obsolete and he would not defend US allies over seas. I am especially afraid the Russians will take his reticent to stand on the wall for democracy there and invade the Baltic states. What they currently do in Syria is absolutely sufficient to keep them at arms length.
VJ is also far from being a communist or a communist sympathizer. We disagree on Castro and the status of Cuba but I would not go that far.
