Police have arrested a Corporal of the Joint Services who allegedly robbed a 43-year-old Chief Prison Officer at knifepoint at around 01.00 hrs yesterday.
A release stated that the Chief Prison Officer was on the Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara awaiting transportation when he was attacked by four men, including one with a knife.
The victim was relieved of a cell phone and $40,000. Another suspect has also been detained.
The arrest of this joint services member comes one month after a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lance Corporal was remanded to prison for a string of robberies carried out around Georgetown.
Army Lance Corporal Jamal Hazel, 21, of Lot 490 ‘A’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown was in mid-January charged with three counts of robbery under-arms. Police said that Hazel confessed to carrying out a string of robberies in the city after trailing their victims on a motorcycle.
He was remanded to prison.

CHARGED: Jamal Hazel

The first charge alleged that on January 10 at North Road, Bourda, Georgetown, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Boodram Hemraj, of one weeding machine, valued $100,000.
The second charge alleged that on January 11 at Pere Street, Kitty, Georgetown, Hazel, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, robbed Andrea Purdessy of a cellular phone valued $210,000 and $400,000 in cash. It was also alleged that on the same day in question while being armed with a gun, he robbed Andrea Purdessy of $4.5M in cash. Additionally, it is alleged that on January 13 at Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, Hazel had in his possession nine rounds of .38 ammunition and at the same time he had in his possession a .38 Pistol, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
Last year, a number of army ranks were brought before the courts for armed robberies.
One such case is that of Corporal Raul Jones, 29. It is alleged that on October 21, 2017 at B Field Sophia, while being armed, Jones robbed a woman of a quantity of jewellery among other items—all totaling $341,000.
Then, again, in September, GDF ranks Clive Seymour and Tumblus Richards were slapped with a robbery charge.
Seymour of Enmore North, East Coast Demerara and Richards of Plum Park, Sophia, Greater Georgetown are accused of robbing Keron Welch of a BLU cellular phone valued $17,000 on September 12, 2017 at Timehri, East Bank Demerara. It is unclear whether they are still serving in the GDF.
