A highly-educated Toronto woman has been charged with attempted murder following an unprovoked stabbing.

Rohinie Bisesar allegedly approached a young woman at a drug store Dec. 11 and plunged a knife into her body. She was arrested Tuesday.

The 40-year-old briefly appeared in court Wednesday morning to face charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

Just before her arrest, the National Post received an email, allegedly from Bisesar, confessing to the stabbing.

“I am sorry about the incidence,” the email read.

“I felt the need to be extreme to see if it would work. I would normally not do such a thing.”

A friend confirmed that the email came from Bisesar’s personal address, but could not confirm if she had written it.

The stabbing took place in the heart of Toronto’s financial district, at a Shopper’s Drug Mart in the underground PATH system. The unidentified victim suffered life-threatening injuries, CBC News reported.

Bisesar’s lawyer, Calvin Barry, said his client has an "impressive resume," including a Masters in Business Administration.

"People have commented that they're shocked and taken aback by this, and this is not her demeanor," Barry told CTV News.

"She's been basically a deer in the headlights because it's all happening so quickly."

The email sent to the National Post went beyond her apparent confession.

"Do you know any top professionals in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, nanotechnology, satellites? Maybe Military. Maybe Government?" it read.

"Something has been happening to me and this is not my normal self and I would like to know who and why this is happening.

"There is either a single person or more responsible and who and why would be nice to know."

Friends described Bisesar as "sweet but odd," noting that she had struggled to hold down a job in recent years.

One friend, Karl Gutowski, said that that her mental health had deteriorated recently and she was hospitalized in 2014. He said she became detached from family and appeared paranoid.

Bisesar is co-operating with police and is expected to return to court on Friday.
