An online study published in Cancer Prevention Researchstates that garlic has been used in China as a medicine since 2000 B.C.E. The author theorizes that compounds like diallyl sulfide are the roots of the herb’s potential preventative power. This idea isn’t so far fetched as numerous studies on garlic have dealt with the relationship between diallyl sulfide and cancer.

 

A researcher from the Republic of Korea states in a paper that dially disulfide (DADS) is a good for preventing cell proliferation in cell lines. Scientists researching this have found that DADS ability to eliminate cells come in a process known as free radical production. The famous tumor suppressor gene, p53, stopped the cell cycle when DADs was present. In fact cancer cells died in less than 24 hours after the DADS treatment activated the p53 gene.

 

Another property that gives garlic its healing ability is Allicin, which is responsible for garlic’s aroma and flavor. Allicin is the world’s most powerful antioxidant. The only catch is Allicin has to decompose before the antioxidant is apparent. However, the reaction between the sulfenic acid and radicals is rapid has it get, only limited by time.
